Challenge Unlimited, Inc. at Ironstone Farm offers an 8-week horsemanship course that provides an overview of the basics of equine understanding, care and management.

The Horsemanship Course is a pre-requisite for the Ironstone Farm Apprentice Program for those preparing for Massachusetts licensure, but can also be an elective for those interested in expanding one's knowledge of horses beyond riding.

The lecture and outdoor, hands-on training will be taught by Ironstone Farm state-licensed instructors who bring a varied expertise and perspective for this dynamic program.
Horsemanship Course Schedule:

Courses are held at Ironstone Farm in Andover, MA: a successful equine facility since 1960.

*Courses are held Thursday evenings from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

June 24:
  • Ironstone Farm Executive Summary
  • Horse introduction, nomenclature, basic grooming and safety.
July 1:
  • Horse breeds and colors, temperament, behavior and vices
  • The "Invisible Horse". Herd observation and breed examples.
July 8:
  • Routine horse management including nutrition, vaccines, teeth care, worming.
  • Hands on management practices
July 15:
  • Emergencies and first aid, including colic, accidents, determination of lameness.
  • Hands on first aid practices including bandaging.
July 22:
  • Basic hoof care, including basics of shoeing, unsoundness
  • Farrier demonstration, types of shoes.
August 5:
  • Riding equipment (tack) and therapeutic equipment.
  • Hands on Saddle fitting and tacking up
August 12:
  • The whos, whys, whens, hows of lunging
  • Hands-on lunging and vaulting
August 19:
  • Horse Trivia and overview

Cost

WenzelHorsemanship Course: $200

Apprentice Course:
$300

The fees for both courses may be paid in full before commencing either program or may be made in two installments.
 
Horsemanship Course Requirements:
  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Completion of Ironstone Farm Horsemanship Course Agreement and Emergency Release Form
  • Attend 7 of 8 courses to receive certificate
  • Payment of course fee: $200

Take the Horsemanship Course as an Elective, or as A Pre-Requisite for the Ironstone Farm Apprentice Program

The Ironstone Farm Apprentice Program provides an opportunity for those interested in becoming a licensed Massachusetts Horseback Riding Instructor.

Ironstone Farm offers practical and classroom instruction that provides the framework to prepare for the MA Horseback Riding Instructor Exam administered by the Department of Agriculture.

This includes the ability to earn 60 hours of the state-required apprenticing hours to be completed within 6 months to one year prior to taking the exam.
