As His Own Soul (IV).
"Then Jonathan and David made a
covenant, because he loved him as his own
soul." (I Samuel 18:3).

Relationships are like a two-way traffic or
transmission process. There are forward flows
as well as backward flows, and these flows
may be positive or negative.
The way we Think, Act and Talk send out
signals; and these signals are very important
in our relationships. We all are like
Thinking, Acting, Talking transmitting stations.
The truth is that we all have both
'transmitters' and
'receivers' within us, and
to a large extent, the way your Thoughts,
Actions and Talk are transmitted, perceived,
decoded, and assimilated will become very
very significant in either strengthening or
weakening the relationship.
Your choice of words, the tone or
pitch of
your voice, the timing of your utterances,
your gesticulations, posture, demeanor and
facial expressions all constitute very strong
signals that can make or mar relationships.
Let me quickly point out 5 key words
which
constituted the major landmarks in the
exemplary relationship between David and
Jonathan as seen in 1 Samuel chapter 18.
1. (verse 1) ... "Soul to
soul" - The soul
of Jonathan was knit with with the soul of
David, showing that relationship is a soul to
soul, or a spirit to spirit affair. Intimate
relationships will be of the heart, and not
of the head. (Ps. 2:7; Pr. 27:19).
2. (verse 1) ...
"Love" -
Jonathan loved
David as his own soul, indicative of the fact
that genuine relationships will be based on
unfeigned agape (i.e. the God-kind of
love).
3. (verse 3) ...
"Covenant"
- Jonathan and
David made a covenant. A covenant is a mutual
agreement, league, understanding, or
confederacy. Genuine long-lasting
relationships are built on agreement;
afterall, can two walk together unless they
be agreed? (Amos 3:3).
4. (verse 4) ...
"Stripped"
- Jonathan
stripped himself; genuine relationships will
of a necessity involve 'nakedness' i.e.
openness or transparency. Whosoever we have
real intimate relationship with becomes our
confidant, and there's therefore no room for
secrecy. We must be ready to be naked and
unashamed. (Gen. 2:25).
5. (verse 5) ...
"Gave" -
Jonathan gave his
robe, garments, sword, bow and girdle to
David. If there's genuine love in any
relationship, this will be evidenced in its
giving. You see, love always ventilates
itself in giving. Sound relationships will
demand that we give our time, energy and all
to the growth and well-being of the
relationship. (John 3:16).
"As in water face answereth to
face, so the
heart of man to man." (Proverbs 27:19).

Holy Humor.
A man sobering up from the night before is
sitting through the Sunday sermon, finding it
long and boring. Still feeling hung over and
tired, he finally nods off.
The priest has been watching him all
along, noticing his apparent hangover and is
disgusted. At the end of the sermon, the
preacher decides to make an example of him.
He says to his congregation, "All
those wishing to have a place in heaven,
please stand."
The whole room stands up except, of
course, the sleeping man.
Then the preacher says even more
loudly, "And he who would like to find a
place in hell please STAND UP!"
The weary man catching only the last
part groggily stands up, only to find that
he's the only one standing.
Confused and embarrassed he says,
"I don't know what we're voting on here,
Pastor, but it sure seems like you and me are
the only ones standing for it!"
