"And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt" (Mark 14:35-36).

The Ministry of the Spirit.

God's work in salvation can be likened to
constructing a building: The Father is the
Architect who plans the project; the
Son is
the Foreman or Construction
Superintendent
who gets the job done; while the Holy Spirit
is the Construction Workman who
actually does
the work of salvation.
It is the Holy Spirit that does the
work of
salvation in preparing the ground (the human
heart ), then builds the house (Salvation),
and keeps the building in repair (Progressive
sanctification).
In today's teaching I want to examine
the three different phases in
which the ministries of the Holy Spirit can
be conceived.
1. His Preconversion
Ministries:- First in
this phase, He reproves and convicts of sin,
which means He is like a Prosecuting
Attorney
who helps the state to prove a case of wrong
doing "...and when he is come, he will bring
convictions to the world..." (John 16:7-10 -
Gspd.).
Second, the Holy Spirit is the
Restrainer which means He can be
compared to
the guard rails on the balcony of a
multi-storey building that protects children.
He helps by holding back harm and danger.
"...but the evil work is held in check and
will be held back until the time when He who
now restrains will be set aside." (II Thess.
2:7 - Nor.)
2. Conversion
Ministries:- In His conversion
ministry, the Holy Spirit regenerates; this
means He is like an Interior Decorator who
renews an old room, making it new. "Not
because we were good enough to be saved, but
in accordance with his own merciful design he
saved us, with the cleansing power which
gives us a new birth, and by the renewing
power of the Holy Spirit." (Titus 3:5 - Tay.,
Knox., TCNT).
Then the Holy Spirit indwells
us, which means he is like an Apartment
Manager who comes to live in the complex to
protect it, and make sure all the equipments
are functioning properly. "Have you forgotten
that your body is the sanctuary of the Holy
Ghost, he lives within you, a gift from God
the Father, so that you are no longer your
own masters" (I Cor. 6:19 - Phi., Mon., Nor.,
Knox.).
Finally, the Holy Spirit is the seal
of the believer, which means he is like the
Notary Public who guarantees the
accuracy of
a signature, and will testify in court if
necessary. As believers, we are advised never
to grieve (offend, distress, or cause to
sorrow) the Holy Spirit. "Do not grieve the
Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed
for the day of your redemption." (Eph. 4:30).
