Going Green... |
In recapping an article in May's Wine Enthusiast, many factors are taken into consideration in determining and reducing the carbon footprint of wine.
In the vineyards, various measures are being taken. To name a few, there is the sowing of cover crops between the rows, fewer tractor passes being made, and composting of grape skins and vine cuttings. At the winery level, photovolatic and solar panels are being installed. With a commitment to a reduction in waste, many wineries are recyclng paper, metal, and plastic and using products from recycled materials.
In the past, many considered 'Wine in the box as bad wine'. Today, bio-degradable Tetra-paks, which surged 54 percent last year, are proving this wrong with quality wines introduced by French Rabbit, and Three Thieves.
Beyond the growing, production and packaging of wine; transportation is a big factor in the carbon footprint. Ocean transport is booming and rail transportation is being explored as an alternative, as it could cut emissions by a third over trucking. Bordeaux's from France actually have less of a carbon footprint than wines from California.
You can find detailed industry specific information regarding the 'greening' of wine at the
The Wine Institute is considering a 'sustainable wine growing' certificate for the wine bottle. The real question about additional requirements and labeling of 'green credentials' is 'Will people pay?'
The Carbon Disclosure Project is a non-profit organization, that seeks to provide information on the business risks and opportunities presented by climate change and greenhouse gas emissions data from the world's largest companies.
As you can see, there is so much out there! Next month, we'll highlight specific companies that are leading the way.
