Friends and Colleagues:
I am pleased to report that I am back on my feet, and
enjoying what’s left of the summer! I hope that you are too!
In this edition of my newsletter, I will be sharing an excerpt
on "Biblical Management" from my presentation entitled
"Non-Destructive Testing and the Inspector for the 21st
Century" which I will be sharing on October 25 with
attendees at the ASNT Fall Conference in Houston.
Before I get into that, though, I would like to share the
following anecdote:
A few weeks ago, I received a call from my first client as a
consultant back in 1998. I feel that this call was actually a
testament to the confidence that my current and former
clients have in the level of expertise I bring to my job as a
quality systems consultant.
The former client was David Coffin, owner of ICSI
Custom Service, Inc., and owner of a prototype
engineering design and manufacturing company.
He was calling because he wanted me to take his existing
Boeing D1:9000-compliant quality system and roll it over into
a third-party registration in AS9100B. Custom
Services had been promised additional work by Boeing,
and other aerospace manufacturers, upon achieving the
AS9100B certification.
I should tell you that David is one of the most talented
engineers I have ever worked with! For many years, he has
been conducting major prototype services for the aerospace
industry. Many times he is only given a concept, which he
then turns into functional reality. Without certification, he will
only be given short runs on specialty items, instead of long
runs that could help to keep his company stable.
Unfortunately, this is common with corporations that
establish rules and regulations, without considering the intent
of existing quality or configuration management policies!
If you would like to learn more about ICSI Custom
Service, Inc. Please visit David's Website at
www.flighthardware.com, or if you are interested
in David's services you can contact him at
David.Coffin@flighthardware.com.
Sincerely,
Joe
P.S. Please feel free to forward this newsletter to your
friends and colleagues who you think might benefit from this
information.
| The Biblical Management Model - A Lesson in Selecting Key Management Personnel and Organizational Structure |
|
When Moses led the 600,000 Israelites into the desert,
management was out of control (Exodus 18:17).
Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, observed Moses sitting as a
judge, while the Israelites would stand around from dawn
until dusk waiting for Moses to make a decision regarding
problems within the group.
Jethro told Moses “listen to me, what you are doing is not
good, the work is to heavy for you and you can not handle it
alone”.
Jethro handed Moses the following bits of
wisdom:
1. You must be the people’s representative before God and
bring their disputes to him
2. Teach them the decrees and laws
3. Show them the way to live, and the duties they are to
perform
4. Select capable men from all the people:
- Men who fear God
- Trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain
- Appoint them as officials over Thousands, Hundreds,
Fifties and Tens
5. Have them serve as judges for the people at all
times
6. Bring every difficult case to you
7. Simple cases they can decide for themselves
Jethro’s words of advice were “If you do this and God so
commands, you will stand the strain, and all these people
will go home satisfied.”
As you can see, the most important thing was to stabilize the
management of the people, no matter how long it took, even
if it took 40 years, as in thise case.
The key is that the decision was based on logic and
good common sense, not a façade or denial of the facts.
Management decisions need to be based on reality, because
even if you put lipstick on the pig, it will still be a pig.
