The 24v Intelli-Fiber Optic System
Lighting enhances our outdoor living spaces. Until now, it is illegal to place low voltage fixtures within 10' of a pool or spa's edge. Pool and spa spaces can be greatly enhanced into breathtaking vistas when properly illuminated. But, based on the National electric Code, NO fixtures can be placed within 5' of a pool and or spa, and if placed within 5'-10', the fixture must be GFI protected which means that only 120v lighting can be used being that only line voltage lighting can be GFI protected. This code rules out ALL low voltage lighting products.
National Electric Code Article 680
680.10 Underground Wiring Location. Underground wiring shall not be permitted under the pool or within the area extending 1.5m (5 ft) horizontally from the inside wall of the pool unless this wiring is necessary to supply pool equipment permitted by this article.
680.22(4) GFI Protection in Adjacent Areas. Luminaires, lighting outlets, and ceiling suspended (paddle) fans installed in the area extending between 1.5m (5 ft) and 3.0m (10 ft) horizontally from the inside walls of a pool shall be protected by a ground-fault interrupter unless installed not less than 1.5m (5ft) above the maximum water level and rigidly attached to the structure adjacent to or enclosing the pool.
A fixture Illuminated with fiber optics CAN be placed 0'-10' of a pool or spa and will not require a GFI. Why? Fiber optics produce NO VOLTAGE at the fixture and are compliant with NEC 680!
Put simply, there is a 24v 250 watt lamp at the illuminator port. The fiber cable is attached to a coupler placed one third of an inch away from the lamp. The light then passes through the fiber cable to the fixture thus producing illumination with no current or voltage in the cable or at the fixture.

 The Intelli-FIber System Basics
The 24v Intelli-Fiber Optic System consists of a few different components. Each playing a distinct role in producing a a reliable, working system.
The Illuminator
The Iluminator is the heart of the fiber optic system. Housing a 24v 250w Quartz Halogen lamp the Illuminator is the sole light / power source for up to 16 lights in the system. What makes our system "Unique" is the fact that it is powered by our 24v Intelli-Matic Transformers and not by a line voltage power supply. This allows you to automate your fiber optic system off of your surrounding low voltage lighting and also prevents you from having to locate the Illuminator where a 120v power source is available or from having to install a 120v power source. The illuminator is where you will run your fiber optic cables into and where the light will be fed through the cables to produce illumination at your fixtures.

Fiber Optic Cable
The Fiber Optic Cable is the link between the Illuminator and Fixtures. The cable is what carries the light from the lamp to the end of the cable producing illumination. It is amazing in how it works but is also quite simple. The cables consist of multiple small clear fibers and can be ordered in 25 strand or 50 strand diameters. The 50 strand will produce more illumination and is recommended for longer runs. The max distance you can run from the Illuminator to the Fixture is 50 ft. so design your system accordingly. You will be able to custom order your Intelli-Fiber Optic System specifying the length and diameter cables required for your lighting system.

Port Assembly / Harness
All of the fiber optic cables will terminate back at the illuminator in what we call the Port Assembly or Harness. The Harness is the part that will snap into the Illuminator just below the lamp feeding light into the fiber optic cable. This connection will be made in the field with the use of a hot knife. Each harness can handle up to 400 fiber strands which means that if you were using all 25 strand cables you could have up to 16 fixtures / cables being illuminated by one single lamp! The Harness will be supplied along with all of the other components and will have 5 different tips included. Each tip is for a different quantity of strands and are all explained in the Intelli-Fiber Optic System Installation manual which will also walk you through making the Harness connection.
Intelli-Fiber Optic Fixtures
Many of your favorite Unique fixtures have been modified to accept the fiber optic cable. Most of our path, area, and step lights as well as our Nova Well Light are available for the Intelli-Fiber Optic System. The light output produced from the IFO fixtures is equivalent to a 10-20w halogen lamp which is ideal for path, area, and step lighting. We are working on expanding the IFO line of products and will send out continuous updates as more fixtures and products become available.
