| | Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner |
Serving on the HART Board for the past couple of years has been an eye-opening experience, to say the least. There is no question HART plays an important role for thousands of daily riders, and this role will be ever-increasing in the future.
Consider this country's current state of energy affairs: Transportation accounts for 29 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, ranking it as the second largest source for these emissions among: electric power industry (33 percent); industry (19 percent); and agricultural, commercial, residential and U.S. territories make up the rest. Moreover, transportation is dominated by cars, sports utility vehicles and pick-up trucks.

Now consider this perilous statement: Green-house gas emissions must be reduced by 50 - 85 percent by 2050 in order to limit global warming to 4 degrees Fahrenheit, thereby avoiding many of the worst impacts of climate change. This statement was given by the Nobel Prize winning 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and published in the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration's Public Transportation's Role in Responding to Climate Change (January 2010 Update).
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation will require a broad range of strategies, and public transportation is a part of the solution, but, for individual households, it's the most important. To reduce household carbon emissions, public transportation is more important than adjusting the thermostat, weatherizing your home, replacing light bulbs and replacing old appliances.

HART is celebrating Earth Day throughout April in many ways, including STAY-cation in April and Ride Free with a Friend on Earth Day, April 22.
Green Challenge: This month, in honor of Earth Day, I challenge you to reduce your carbon footprint by at least 20 pounds by resolving to ride transit. For a solo commuter, this is easily achieved in just one day by switching from a private vehicle to public transit.
It's easy to find out how much you can save by using the Carbon Savings Calculator on the HART of Green page at www.goHART.org |

| Are You Riding the Green Route? | |
The fact is public transportation offers an immediate alternative for households seeking to reduce their energy use and carbon footprints. Car transportation alone accounts for 55 percent of the carbon footprint of a typical American family with two cars. There is a potential carbon savings of 30 percent from eliminating one car and taking public transportation, which means riding public transit far exceeds the benefits of other ways that families go green, including using energy-efficient light bulbs or adjusting thermostats.
Now think about how riding public transit benefits the world. Human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels, are causing global warming. A recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change lists several projected impacts of climate change, including sea level rise, more extreme weather, agricultural production changes, and water supply stress. The report concludes that carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gas emissions must be significantly reduced in order to avoid many of these disastrous impacts of climate change.
National averages demonstrate that public transportation produces significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile than private vehicles. Specifically, bus transit produces 33 percent less.
Also, take heart in the fact that HART is doing its part to help the environment, too. In addition to hybrid buses that are part of HART fleet, more than half of the 530 HART shelters are lit by solar power, and all future shelters will use solar power!

Maria Melaragno |
I live on Harbour Island and I take the In-Town trolley to and from my workplace in downtown Tampa. I've been doing this for a couple of years, several times a week. Taking the bus to work makes my whole day better. When I drive alone, it's just me and irritating traffic. When I take the bus, I get to say hello to my neighbors at the bus stop. While riding, I simply relax, read or chat with my friends on the bus. It's just a much more pleasant start of the business day. Riding the bus saves money, it's green and it makes me feel good not to buy so much gasoline.
Maria Melaragno is a planner at Tindale-Oliver & Associates, Inc., a planning and engineering firm. In addition to being a public transit rider, as a professional planner she knows well that fixed-route public transportation creates jobs and is a catalyst for economic development. By simply taking a stand for public transportation on IM4Transit.org, Ms. Melaragno was selected as the latest winner of a monthly drawing for a 42-inch HDTV. IM4TRANSIT is an online campaign of the Florida Public Transportation Association that aims to get 100,000 Floridians to show their support for public transportation. FPTA is a nonpartisan organization that educates the public about the benefits and importance of public transportation in Florida. |
