Mapping Out the Future of HART

HART CEO David ArmijoHART is driven to serve you. This is our vision now, and will continue to be what drives HART in the future.

The transportation needs of this community are significant. To meet these needs, the passage of the 1-cent sales tax would have allowed HART to move forward with a vast service expansion and introduce new transit service modes, such as light rail. HART will continue to provide excellent service to the best of our ability within HART's fiscal constraints. HART has been successful in the past in identifying efficiencies that have greatly contributed to our current balanced budget. Therefore, HART will continue to aggressively and creatively pursue alternative funding opportunities to help mitigate declining funding sources.

I want to thank and commend the hundreds of thousands of residents who took an interest in the transportation issues at hand and became involved. HART will continue to do the very best to educate and inform residents about its programs and services, and keep them engaged about HART's future plans. Public involvement is a priority for HART, and this issue of A Community with HART outlines how to stay informed about the latest transit talk.

So what happens next? HART is funded to continue with the Alternatives Analysis through the short-term, but additional funding will be needed to complete it. Many residents are excited about the TECO Line Streetcar extension project, scheduled to be operational by the end of this year. In 2012, HART plans to roll out its first MetroRapid service along Nebraska Avenue to provide residents with a rapid connection between North and Downtown Tampa.

With the support of this community, HART has had the privilege to serve residents for nearly 31 years. The past few years have been especially transformative for HART, and this team will continue to strive to exceed expectations.

-Ridership:  HART wrapped up its fiscal year 2009-2010 with the highest bus ridership in its 30-year history! September's bus ridership was tallied at 1,122,969 trips, which is up almost 5 percent from the previous month, and up more than 11 percent from September 2009.

-Savings:  Riding public transportation saves individuals on average $9,502 annually and $792 per month based on the average national gas price and national unreserved monthly parking rate, according to a September Transit Savings Report released by the American Public Transportation Association.

-Economy:  In the second quarter 2010, more than 2.5 billion trips were taken on U.S. public transportation as ridership increased slightly by .1 percent over the second quarter of 2009, according to a recent report by the American Public Transportation Association. This uptick in ridership is the first increase in six quarters. Historically, as the economy grows, public transit ridership tends to increase.

What Does HART Do For You? Finding Out Is Easy!

HART holds public outreach for transit plans

During the past year, HART

has held 366 outreach events to educate residents about public transportation

Providing easy access to information and convenient ways to give feedback is important to HART when it comes to communicating with residents about the ways this agency serves this community. The Community Relations and Marketing Departments of the Service Development Department Division have spent the last two years revamping the way HART engages residents, whether it is through unique promotions to introduce or reintroduce HART services to customers, outreach events to educate residents about upcoming programs and projects, or social media sites where followers can obtain up-to-date information and provide feedback. These communication avenues have been very successful to ensure customers and residents are aware of the services provided by HART.

In Fiscal Year 2010, HART supported and/or conducted 366 outreach meetings and events, up from 133 in Fiscal Year 2009. (Wow! That's one every day of the year, including weekends and holidays!) HART's Speakers Bureau is made up of a diverse group of transportation experts who represent every department at HART. They have provided valuable information about current and future services at places and times convenient to residents, including evenings and weekends. These educational outreach efforts also provided a venue for customer feedback and input.

Whether a resident prefers to pick up a pamphlet and read at their own leisure (such as this newsletter), attend an outreach event and have a one-on-one dialogue with a transportation expert, or receive regular updates (in 140 characters or less!) through social media, convenient access to current, accurate HART information is at your fingertips!

When I was 9, I started riding HART. I'm now 21 and over the years, I have seen HART services drastically change for the better. I remember when there used to be a Transfer Center behind University Mall and some of the routes ended service at 7 p.m. I rely on HART to get to work and Hillsborough Community College. I love the fact that Routes 6 and 32 run late so I don't have to worry about finding another way home.  If HART did not have late night service I would be forced to either call a cab, ride a bicycle, or walk from my job in Sabal Park to my home in Temple Terrace, a distance of several miles.

Over the past couple of years, HART has developed eight routes that offer late-night service. These routes are concentrated in the urban core, but also reach unincorporated areas of Hillsborough County.

HART is dedicated to providing excellent customer service while building solutions to support Hillsborough County's needs.....now and into the future
