HART Receives Outstanding Award
The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has named HART this year's winner of the APTA 2010 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award. This prestigious designation makes HART the best of the best of the nation's mid-sized transportation systems which carry between 4 to 20 million annual passenger trips.
APTA honors one public transportation system in North America in three size categories every year. Systems are judged on their performance over a 3-year period.
The award touts HART's achievements in ridership growth, financial management, environmental sustainability, workforce development, and community relations. HART could not be more thrilled to have been honored with an award which distinguishes its public transportation system among one of the top in the country.
To honor the 727 HART employees who helped make the APTA award possible, HART held an employee tribute on June 17, 2010. The celebration brought together employees, agency leaders, Board members and government officials for a brief expression of appreciation and inspiration.
Paying tribute to HART employees were: HART founder and former Florida Governor Bob Martinez, HART Board Chairman and Vice Mayor of Temple Terrace Ron Govin, Florida State Senator Victor Crist, Florida State Representative Richard Glorioso, Hillsborough County Commissioner and Vice Chair Mark Sharpe, HART's most senior Bus Operator, Thomas Moulding. Former NFL Football Player and Tampa Bay Buccaneer Linebacker Ryan Nece was the keynote speaker imparting a memorable speech about the winning value of teamwork.
Thomas
Moulding addressed his co-workers
during the event. Mr. Moulding told of the many positive changes he has experienced over his 36 years with HART, and he energized the group when he
spoke about the exciting changes still to come.
RTIP 101
Class is now in session...
As HART continues its countywide education outreach class, a new subject has been added for the summer session -- RTIP. The text of the Rapid Transit Investment Plan (RTIP) educates on the purpose, plan development, components and financials, accountability and implementation of the 1¢ transportation sales tax referendum scheduled to be voted upon November 2, 2010.
The purpose of these efforts is to keep the public involved in HART planning and services while also sharing the impact HART has on the local economy now and into the future. To request a speaker for your group,
please contact Dorcas Jameson at JamesonD@goHART.org or call
223-6831 ex. 1747. HART appreciates the opportunity to inform
neighborhood,
group or club about HART services and the Rapid
Transit Investment Plan while also hearing your ideas and
suggestions.

What HART Means To Me
HART Patron, Hilary Neal, shares her HART transit story...
About 9 years ago my life was on a downhill slide. I was so stressed that my health was declining rapidly. I was living in a rat race and my body was turning against itself. I was losing the ability to function well and to enjoy life. So, I made the decision to give up my car and started taking the bus wherever I needed to go. I began to heal my mind and my body.
For the first time in a long time I was able to sit and read. I met many wonderful and interesting people, and I learned much from them. I am able to look and actually see changes that were taking place in my community that I never would have noticed if I had been driving. I watch and feel the change of seasons and used the time waiting for the buses to feel and breathe in my surroundings. I suddenly did not have the expense of a car, no gas, no repairs, no insurance, no more fighting traffic, no road rage, and rushing here and there.
I can save money and pay off debts so that I can hopefully buy a house in the near future. The drivers are awesome! They are friendly and actually care about their passengers. Since I walk to the bus stops, I am satisfying my need for exercise, but the biggest benefit for me is the fact that by taking the bus, I have my health back, have found a sense of peace again, and I have been able to start saving money. Public transportation has really given me a life.
