Biography
Ballet Hispanico

Founded in December of 1970, Ballet Hispanico quickly became locally renowned for its lively performances as well as its strong educational programs. By the 1980s the company had already toured internationally and was establishing new outreach programs such as the annual "Performances for Young People," which still continues today. In 1989, the Company brought its contemporary aesthetic to the roots of Hispanic culture with a two-week tour of Spain. This was followed, several years later, by a tour of Panama, Venezuela, Argentina and Uruguay. A decade later, the Company's original founder, Tina Ramirez, was awarded the Hispanic Heritage Award for Education at The Kennedy Center. In 2005, she received the National Medal of Arts from President George W. Bush. In 2009, Eduardo Vilaro officially took the reigns from founder Tina Ramirez as Artistic Director. Ballet Hispanico's mission unfolds in the work of the professional Company, the School of Dance, and the Education & Outreach programs. Together, these divisions celebrate the dynamic aesthetics of the Hispanic diaspora, building new avenues of cultural dialogue and sharing the joy of dance with all communities.
