Hello from Hilary Scott

The Italian Riviera is beautiful in November! With several days being warm enough to take off my coat and enjoy the sun on my face while attending the Festival Degli Autori, from which I just returned, I almost felt like winter was not ever going to arrive. My participation in this campus in Sanremo was a turning point for me. I performed for a jury of several industry professionals, (which included Euro Ferrari - a producer that has worked with Bjork and Sting and the Pointer Sisters, to name a few) and my peers, fellow performers and songwriters from whom I learned so much. I was informed on the first day of the campus, after performing a bit of one of my new songs titled "And Just," that I would be moved into the finals. This means a return to Italy in June - when the weather will REALLY be stunning - and a performance for labels and other industry pros from Europe. In the meantime, my song "And Just" will be recorded and placed on their compilation disc to be released next year and ditributed all over the country. Apparently they love Americana!

Now I am back in the Midwest and ready for several shows in December! I am really looking forward to releasing my new album, Indigo, at Orr Street Studios in Columbia on December 5th. While I developed the arrangements of these songs performing solo, the Hilary Scott Band will be performing all the songs with me that night, as well as some older favorites and new songs that I have written during my time overseas. I am hoping all of you will come out and bring friends - it will be a great time, and I might even wear a traditional Vietnamese Ao Dai from my travels. Now if only I could get all the guys to dress up with me....hmmmm.....

Other gigs in December include a night at Top Ten Wines when I will invite audience questions regarding my songs or songwriting in general, and a return to MoJo's in Columbia which has long been one of our supporters and favorites places to play. In fact, I played my very first Columbia show ever at MoJo's. Members of the Hilary Scott Band will also play a New Year's Eve show for the Compass Records Showcase at Stamper Commons on the Stephens College Campus on December 31st. We hope you can make it out to one or all of these shows, we'd love to see you.

December 5, 2009, marks the official release date of Hilary Scott's new album Indigo, and the release concert will take place in Columbia, Missouri, at Orr Street Studios. Hilary will be performing several times with the Hilary Scott Band in December and is working on recording an EP with AJ Gennaro and Nick Heim of St. Louis for a new project.

Hilary Scott will focus in 2010 on touring more in the United States and promoting her eight recorded albums. However, in June she will return to Sanremo, Italy, for the finals of Festival Degli Autori to perform for Industry reps from Europe. Her new song, "And Just" will appear on the Sanremo Productions 2010 compilation disc to be distributed nationally.

Keith Colley and the Can Do! project
  Traveling on the Mekong
In October, Hilary met with Keith Colley to learn about his extensive Can Do! project focused at revitalizing and re-thinking the way children are educated in this country, and the world over. Keith has developed educational materials that are not only brilliantly creative, but which seem to dip into every possible realm of subject matter. The central concept is that media is an incredibly powerful educator, for good or for ill, and the messages children - or any person of any age, for that matter - receive, shape their thoughts and actions, and consequently shape the world we live in. Education is not simply about learning facts, but about building character and confidence, and Colley's materials incorporate these themes in a mind-bendingly thought-provoking way. Hilary has written America's Song as part of this expansive curriculum and is excited about the possibilities for where this collaboration will lead.

Hilary Scott, joined by the Hilary Scott Band, will release her 8th album, Indigo, at 8 PM, at the Orr Street Studios on December 5, 2009, in Columbia, MO. In his article about the event entitled, Hilary Scott hits Columbia with new CD, slew of shows, Aarik Danielsen of the Columbia Daily Tribune writes, "It will be a homecoming of sorts next week when singer- songwriter Hilary Scott begins a swing through some of Columbia's most notable cultural venues." (Read the full article).

Indigo is Hilary Scott's first all-cover album, interpreting some of her favorite songwriters with her own arrangements, infusing these well-loved standard and contemporary songs with shades of folk, jazz and blues. The idea for Indigo came about as Hilary was traveling and playing music overseas. Indigo's release follows Hilary Scott's return from Sanremo, Italy, where she participated in the November campus of the Festival Degli Autori, designed specifically to foster artist collaboration on an international level.

Speaking about Indigo, Hilary says, "I'm a songwriter... covering music has never been my priority, yet I've found joy in the process of interpretation. I wanted these takes to capture my live performances as much as possible, using arrangements that have grown out of months of improvisation. Covering music is a balancing act-honoring the original concept of the song and making it truly my own, but the guiding force for me has always been the feeling behind the song."

Hilary Scott is excited to be releasing Indigo at the Orr Street Studios, a showplace and community for the arts in Columbia, a place for local artists to unleash their creativity. Anne Nelson of the Columbia Daily Tribune says, that the studio "has emerged as a work of art itself". Orr Street embodies the idea of artist collaboration and Hilary Scott's music has incorporated the talents and energies of many people in Missouri over the years. Hilary notes that, "Orr Street Studios is the perfect venue to release Indigo, since the album is a wonderful collaboration of local artists."

The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at The Mansion Studios by Bruce Barkelew and Adam Roehlke. Photographer for Indigo is Anastasia Pottinger and the album art was designed by Lynne Lampe of L Squared. Guitarists Bill Adams and Bruce Barkelew contributed to several Indigo tracks.

Previously-released albums have included many other artists as well, including members of the Hilary Scott Band: Rob Lampe, Bill Adams, Mike Robertson, Matt Griffin, Carol Elliot and former members Loyd Warden, Michael Bielski and Jason Dinwiddie. Previous albums have been recorded at The Music House, Floating World Studios and The Bridge Studio. Musician, engineer and producer Stephen Gardner has played a major role in the production of several of Hilary Scott's albums. Anastasia Pottinger and Kevin Dingman have been band photographers over the years, and Kevin Dingman produced the album art for Road To Hope. Consonance, released in May of 2009 is a collaboration with singer-songwriter Wes Wingate and a joint venture between Home Tone Records and Belltown Records. John Henry Parr (John Henry and the Engine) and Pat Kay were also contributing musicians to Consonance.
