What?
This is one of the most problematic and potentially frustrating areas of the tax return for most taxpayers.

This can be tricky when a security has a history of corporate events like spinoffs, stock splits or nontaxable stock dividends because adjustments have to be made.

Fortunately, beginning with stocks purchased in 2011, brokerages and others will be required to report the cost basis of the position when they are sold.

This will be a first step and very helpful one to taxpayers. However, do you think it's because the government is here to help?  Think again. You see the government believes people are underreporting their capital gains by billions of dollars, and they would love to be able to tax it
if only the IRS could verify the cost basis figures!

Until it is fully implemented, the taxpayer will still be responsible for the all the recordkeeping and the math of all the adjustments so don't hesitate to get the help you may need in planning your tax strategy for what's coming!

Answers to "Buy American":

1) Jeep Patriot has a 66% domestic content rating while the Toyota Sequoia is 80% domestic.

2) The BMW X5 is assembled in South Carolina while the Pontiac G8 is assembled in Australia.

3) Although the Ford Crown Victoria has a 90% domestic content rating it is assembled in Canada so it would be technically disqualified as American made, whereas the Toyota Sequoia is 80% domestic content and is assembled in Tennessee, the Toyota "wins".

Moral of the "Buy American" questions... all is not as it appears as we are truly a global economy. Likewise, the tax code is certainly not as it appears and simply buying TurboTax does not make one an accountant.

I hope you hate the cost of taxes more than you hate the cost of employing the strategies for tax advantages.
