Church Continues Forward February 2007
Dr. Mathews preaching
Greetings!
As we near the payoff for the land ($85,000) and begin raising money for the walls and architectural drawings (the Nehemiah Project), we thought we would take a pause and let you know some exciting things that have been going on around the church.

Right, Dr. Glenn Mathews expounds the Scriptures at our recent Prophecy Conference, while Miguel Mercedes provides the translation. The messages sounded great in English and Spanish!

Prophecy, a Red Heifer, Peter and a Group of Teenagers
Our church was honored to have Dr. Glenn Mathews for a prophecy conference at the beginning of February; he touched the first three topics in the headline directly in his messages, he also unknowingly, indirectly spoke to a group of unsaved teenagers. Our people enjoyed the applicable depth of Dr. Mathews’ exposition of the Scriptures and many continue to talk about the conference, though it has been a few weeks.

On one of the nights, a small group of teenagers had been to the service (they had been visiting for some time) and had left the church to go home. When the teenagers reached the opposite street corner, they turned around and decided to go back to the church to accept the Lord! Miguel and Noemi had the privilege of leading them to the Lord and the group continues to come to church and participate in the youth ministry.

Great Conversations Series Continued– The Preacher
In a new tradition started by house parents Miguel and Noemi Mercedes, the boys home has had the opportunity to have a “round-table” type discussion with special, visiting guests. The home was recently blessed as guest speaker Dr. Glenn Mathews took some time, after one of the services in our Prophecy Conference, to share some pizza and a conversation. It was exciting seeing the boys leaning forward to listen to Dr. Mathews talk about being a preacher and seeing the boys ask him questions. What an honor it was for the boys home to be able to enjoy this intimate fellowship with a wonderful, man of God.

Milly
People You Should Know: Dr. Milly Rivera
On Friday, February 9, a few of us had the privilege of attending Milly’s thesis presentation. It was a three hour ordeal where she and her partners discussed their findings after 1 ½ years of field study on jaundice. She asked us to go for moral and prayer support, and they needed it. Allison and Noemi prayed with her before it started and then her partners (who are not Christians) asked Milly to pray with them. The ladies from our church provided the customary snack spread for the judges.

A week later, we were invited to her graduation. She graduated with a medical degree, Cum Laude! She is officially Dr. Ruth Milagros Rivera Mercedes. Milly sings in the choir and also is one of the Youth Team workers.

“A Significant Bathroom for a Significant Church”
While Miguel Mercedes jokingly coined the above phrase at a recent staff meeting, perhaps he was not too far off. In preparation for the church’s auditorium expansion, we talked over some small projects and slight improvements, so of course, the bathroom was mentioned. This new bathroom provides the church with one for women and one for men. Monday, the workers broke ground. It should be ready by the end of the week and we are not sure what kind of dedication ceremony to even have for a second bathroom, but praise the Lord for the need!

This bathroom addition, follows an office renovation. Next, we have a couple of small partitions to take down in the back room. Part of the material will be used to build a divider wall between the bathrooms and the future auditorium space. Then, the church must buy another air-conditioning unit and additional seating. Please pray for all the "behind-scenes" steps that the church is taking in preparation for the auditorium expansion. The renovations will cost at least a couple of thousand dollars, but we praise the Lord that the church is able to pay for this out of its own accounts without outside help. This is an important, excellent sign in the life of such a young church.

Church Continues to Move Forward
Thank you for your prayers and support for our church in San Pedro de Macoris. Remember, at the nucleus of this vision is a strong, significant church. While we are raising money for the associated ministries in the DR Vision, you will not often see us raising money for the church. It certainly is not because nothing is going on, or our focus is not on this church. We purposely try to stay quiet on most church needs because we believe it is the church's responsibility to take care of its needs. We are trying to build in the "DNA" of the church the idea that God wants to use our church, but we must remain faithful in our giving of tithes and offerings. As our church continues to learn to trust God in areas of finances, this prepares us for the significant impact He wants our church to have in the future. God is blessing our church as we depend on His provisions and respond in sacrificial giving. Praise the Lord for a healthy, young church!
