October 2005 Daystar Baptist Missions Newsletter
What's New with the Team?
Hola!
Let us first say thank you all for your faithful prayers and thoughts as we work here in the Dominican Republic. Our team (Hales, Hodges, Mercedes, Diaz and future members) are so appreciative of what you do on the home front in order to keep us down here. We are truly grateful for your sacrifices, time and care. For this reason, we are so excited to announce this new email newsletter platform for getting you more timely updates on our ministry. We trust this new, additional platform will better keep you informed and connected with our team here in the Dominican Republic.

Usually these updates will be in a newsletter form with different articles from different team members working here in the San Pedro. Ours is an exciting, dynamic team ministry with a huge vision and we want to be sure to keep you informed on how to pray or get involved! Feel free to contact us through the link at the bottom and, by all means, feel free to forward our newsletter over to anyone that may have an interest in our ministry. Thank you for being part of the team!

Baptism on the Coast
Taking the Church to the Beach
We are not sure how much we stirred the waters in the ocean, but one thing is for sure - Gary and Miguel baptized 10 believers last Sunday after the morning service! What a privilege it is to be a part of new believers taking their first real spiritual steps in obedience to our Lord's command. What a testimony to lives and eternal destinies changed by the power of the gospel.

Of course, baptizing in the ocean presents some logistical problems - the beach and rivers in San Pedro are not the cleanest, causing us to have to take the church to the beach 15 minutes away.

Despite the obstacle though, we had a good number from our church participate and we saw our membership grow by 10 people. We praise the Lord for what the Lord is doing in our church and with our church.

Daystar Internship Producing Fruit
  Recruiting Underway for 2006 Program
On June 20 the third Daystar Internship wrapped up and we couldn't be happier at the results. Our internship is structured to give the college students thorough, hands-on training in missions as part of our missions team, exposure and participation in discipleship as well as intense missiology training, a college-level Spanish Language course and a Visioneering Adventure weekend! Not only does the internship greatly help our church, our team has an opportunity to share our lives and ministry with missions-minded college students. Each year we strive to make the internship the best opportunity in the world for learning and doing missions!

Doug and Paula Hodges have been in the States for several weeks now recruiting for Internship 2006.They have already visited Tennessee Temple University, Pensacola Christian, Piedmont, Trinity, Northland, Maranatha and Cedarville. The response has been wonderful with nearly 50 requests for applications already in.

Also, we are excited to announce that two former interns have recently been accepted as new missionaries with Daystar Baptist Missions. Priscilla Bowley, an intern from 2004, and Wendy Nicholas from 2005 have just been accepted. Mari Diaz, an intern from 2003 and an internship leader in 2004 is finishing up a year in the Dominican Republic as a missionary associate. It is such a blessing to see God use this internship to get "harvesters for the harvest!" Pray for us! We will select about 20 for the program and we want God to send us the right number and the right people! Also, if there is anyone you know that would be interested in the internship let us know!

The Ladies Ministry
Alli Hale   Overflowing Joy
The Ladies Ministry here in the Dominican Republic is an exciting place to be. In the past few months, we have opened up a small coffee shoppe, hosted a ladies conference, and begun discipleship with five new ladies!

You may ask what do we need a coffee shoppe for? My first response would be, "Caffeine!" But that is not true! The ladies here in the Dominican love coffee. It is a common denominator we all share. The coffee shoppe is in a small house about a block and a half from the church. Also, our ladies Sunday School class meets there. Any proceeds from the sales of coffee or desserts during the week goes back into the coffee shoppe/ladies ministry. The name of the coffee shoppe is The Overflowing Cup. Our ladies also meet there on Saturday afternoons for prayer. Sitting and listening to our ladies talk about the changes in their lives since they accepted Christ has been an Overflowing Joy for me. I have left several meetings with tears in my eyes. One Sunday I didn't even start the lesson because of the testimonies of change, blessing and most importantly opportunities to share Christ with friends and family. That day our cup was truly running over!

Our next project along with the Overflowing Cup will be to add a small resource library. This will be a way that our church members and the public can come and read and study at the coffee shoppe. We will stock it with Spanish commentaries and other types of Bible study helps. We need to raise the seed money in order to begin purchasing the books for the library, as the Church's bookstore is still not to the point where it can financially pay for it (though that is part of the long-term strategy of expansion). So, if you will, pray that we can begin the ministry of the library in the next couple of months as another tool to equip Christians. The library will be part of the Coffee Shoppe and will be an intricate part of the Coffee Shoppe ministry.
