Swimming for Kids of All Abilities
Looking for a fun summer activity that the whole family can do? Swimming is a great way to exercise your heart and lungs while also building strength and flexibility. If you choose to check out the local pool, Public pools can offer many options, including swim lessons and exercise classes, but it's also easy enough to plan your own outing. Keep in mind the temperature of the pool depending on your family needs. Lakes are also a great option. A fun outing can be had by trying a new lake or beach; pack a picnic and enjoy the water with the kids. Another benefit for pool or lake dwellers to keep in mind is swimming can be a totally non-weight-bearing activity, often necessary in those with brittle bones or children recovering from surgeries. Whatever you do this summer, seize the opportunity and pick a pool or beach and enjoy the soothing and relaxing benefits of water before the kids head back to school this fall!

Pediatric Therapy
| Feeling Flat?: Torticollis and Plagiocephaly
Parents tend to notice pretty early, the baby is SO photogenic with her head tilted to one side in the cutest way. But then they get used to that just being the way baby looks and don't realize that her head is like that all the time. Torticollis is usually the cause of that cute pose, causing the head to tilt toward one shoulder as the neck rotates toward the opposite shoulder. In older children and adults, it is usually the result of abnormal muscle tone in the neck muscles. In infants, it can be related more to in utero positioning, preferred sleeping and play positions, premature birth, injury, or underlying neurodevelopmental issues. So why do we, as pediatric physical therapists, care so much and have to mess with that adorable picture pose? Read More |
