Chairless in Arizona
It has been a busier travel season for me this spring and my luck ran out on my trip to Scottsdale, Arizona. I was sitting on the plane day dreaming and waiting for takeoff when my colleague said to me, "did you hear that?" Apparently the captain came over the intercom and said there would be a delay due to the belly door being damaged by a wheelchair and it needed to be fixed before takeoff. The odds of it being my chair were high because I was the only one with their own wheelchair that boarded the plane. The landing was picture perfect and there was no mention from the flight crew nor the airport staff that helped me off the plane about a damaged wheelchair. They got me into the jetway and I attempted to position my chair to transfer into, I knew instantly that it was not right. It wobbled like it was ready to collapse. Upon further inspection we could tell, at minimum, that the one wheel was pretty much destroyed. Now what?

Being an Inspiration, Bonding with Kids, Vent Dependent Quad Podcast
Being an Inspiration - Even When You Don't Know It
I don't know about you, but it was really weird the first time someone was "inspired" by me because I was out in public. That I don't really like. But I do like it when someone with a disability contacts me and tells me I've been able to help them in some way.
Kids and I are Like This
I used to think kids were too in your face and questioning, but now after spending the last five years with my three amazing nieces, I actually like those qualities about kids. One of the things that frustrates me most in this life is when the things that need to be said, aren't. But kids have no problem whatsoever saying those things.
Podcast #85: A vent? No big
Featuring Jenni Taylor, a fabulous woman who's a C1-C2 vent-dependent quad and former Ms. Wheelchair Minnesota. She talks about her injury, work as a motivational speaker, and relationship with another quad.

| Finding Gratitude in Your Disability
"Gratitude and disability in the same sentence?" you may be wondering. Absolutely. Truth be told, we can find gratitude in any situation...good, bad, or indifferent. And disability is no exception. Does gratitude eliminate all the daily challenges that are associated with living with a disability or caring for someone with a disability? Absolutely not. It will, however, reduce stress, allow you to shift your focus, and even turn a challenging day into a success. Over the past couple of years, I have been honored to have the opportunity to serve as an Ambassador for The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. It has allowed me to speak to many military veterans across the country. Speaking to veterans is always quite humbling, but speaking to veterans with disabilities is always a joy and a challenge.

CELA 2012 - Continuing Education and Legislation Advocacy
In previous years our emphasis during CELA visits to our members of Congress was to educate them about Complex Rehab Technology. Complex power wheelchairs, highly configurable manual wheelchairs, adaptive seating and positioning systems and other specialized equipment (such as standing frames and gait trainers) are considered "Complex Rehab Technology" or CRT. This year (2012) CELA was different, the story had changed. Legislation was introduced by Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY- 07) on April 18, 2012, HR-4378, titled; "Ensuring Access to Quality Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act of 2012." This year we went to our members of Congress asking for co-sponsorship or a Senate companion bill to HR-4378. To read about HR-4378 and to find out what you can do to help move this bill toward reality I've included a link to the NCART website.
