Modifying Easter Activities for Your Special Needs Child

Tired of your child coming back with an empty basket at Easter egg hunts? Is regular egg decorating too difficult for your child? Here are modified or alternative activities you can do with your child this Easter. Adapted activities included in this blog are: accessible egg hunt, decorating Easter eggs, meeting the Easter Bunny and more. It also talks about educating the community about making Easter events accessible for all kids, alternatives to candy for those kids on a special diet, and ways kids can work on different skills while having fun this Easter.

You Too Can Dance!

Do you use a wheelchair and think dancing is off-limits because you can't walk? Wheelchair-users of all levels are having fun on the dance floor and you can too. All it takes is getting rid of shyness, a great smile and of course, practice. There are loads of awesome dances and moves that work great if you use a wheelchair. From ballroom dancing to hip-hop, you can wheelchair dance. Dancing is good for you too. When you use a wheelchair, you can be left out on a lot of fun things. We have to watch from the sidelines a lot and we all know how boring it can be. So put on your dancing wheels and get ready. If Artie on Glee can show everyone at school that wheelchair-users can be awesome dancers, why can't you?

Early Childhood Intervention

I'm just weeks away from starting a new job in Early Intervention. As I have been sharing the exciting news with family, friends, and other members of educational teams, some have been surprised to learn about this service offered by our school district. I figure if these lovely people don't know much about it, then there are probably a whole lot of other people in the world who don't know much about it either. Let me try to break it down for you. Early Intervention services are federally mandated through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Children from birth to age three who are identified as being at risk for developmental disabilities may qualify for these services. Successful intervention benefits the child, the family, and the surrounding community by improving physical and cognitive development from an early age, decreasing future needs for Special Education and medical services.
