Explaining SCI to Kids & Living Life 3 Inches at a Time
I Live My Life Three Inches At A Time
Arguably, the most recognizable quote from the movie "The Fast and the Furious" is when Dominic Toretto tells Brian O'Conner, "I live my life a quarter mile at a time." If I were to apply that to my world, I would say that I live my life three inches at a time. Those three inches represent the highest threshold that I can roll over in my wheelchair to get into doorways, etc. on my own.
Explaining Spinal Cord Injury To Kids Anyone who has a spinal cord injury has eventually gotten "the question" some version of "What happened to you?" As an uncle of a four-year-old nephew and three-year-old niece, I have been bracing myself for "the question" from either of them for about a year now. They finally asked about three weeks ago.

Newly Injured SCI, Accessibility Documentary & Disability Podcast
Why New Injuries Have It Better Than We Did When I found myself a new quadriplegic in 1993, I was told the resources and equipment available to me were the best yet. But that was 18 years ago, and a lot has changed since then. People injured now have access to so much more. Can't Study Abroad? Make A Documentary
Having your dreams of studying abroad dashed is something college wheelchair users go through. But Reid Davenport, a college senior with CP, will be in Europe for three weeks and will document the rampant inaccessibility there. Podcast - Jennifer Longdon, An Advocate With Heart In episode #81 of No Free Rides, Tiff's joined by Jennifer Longdon, a fighter of a paraplegic. Hear her take on everything from accessible realty and passe attitudes toward disabilities, to bringing diversity to Project Runway. |

Disability Video
| Can I Get a Little Help Please?
Independence. When you live with a disability, you strive for this more than anything else. You will do anything in your power to achieve even a small portion of what independence can deliver. Still, the fact remains that if you live with any type of disability, part of your independence has been taken away from you. The major question is not necessarily how much independence you have or can achieve, but what is possible with the help or assistance of others. We can all be stubborn from time to time, wanting to do whatever we possibly can by ourselves, alone. Trust me, I know. I may be one of the poster-children for stubbornness. However, I have also learned in my 26 years of being paralyzed and living with a disability that "asking for help" is one of the most empowering acts one can experience. It's not easy, but it sure is liberating. Read More |

NCART Video - Complex Rehab Technology, What is It? by Nancy Perlich
For over 25 years I have had the privilege of working in an industry that creates products to improve the lifestyles and livelihoods of those who are unable to stand or walk - simple things many of us take for granted daily. Unfortunately, few outside this environment truly understand what Complex Rehab Technologies are until they or someone they love must use this technology. An 11 minute video produced by NCART raises awareness about what we in this industry do to help those with disabilities lead more active, normal and healthier lives. Take a moment to glimpse into the lives of people with disabilities and understand that Complex Rehab Technologies are essential for health and daily living. Nothing quite explains CRT like the people who use it every day. Watch Video |
