A Step By Step Quest To Declare My Independence

Being a spinal cord injury quadriplegic who heavily depends on personal care attendants, accommodations, disability services, and things of that nature to live my daily life, makes reaching my full independence elusive. Rather, in my world achieving independence is something that I've gained bit by bit as the years have gone by. I am very independent for a quad, but I always crave to be much more so! So staying within the spirit of July 4th, I thought that I would offer up a few examples of what have been important personally historic steps to me becoming more and more independent as a person with a disability over the past 15 years since my paralyzing diving accident.

Weather Safety Tips, Beating Boredom, Aging With a Disability, & New Podcast

Tornadoes seem to be Mother Nature's favorite go-to natural disaster as of late and it's getting on my poor nerves. It's hard enough getting away from a tornado when you CAN walk, let alone trying to get away unscathed when you use a wheelchair.

Beating the Monotony of Everyday Life

Humans have a tendency to get bored fast. Too fast! I don't know about you, but there's only so much of the sameness this girl can take, and the not-walking thing isn't helping.

What Will My Disability Be Like 10 Years From Now?

I frequently catch myself thinking of what the future will bring. I specifically think about how my good 'ol spinal cord injury will hold up, worrying that my abilities will get worse as I age.

Podcast #75 - Voice-Over Actor & Storyteller Aims High

Tiff talks with paralyzed actor Drew Bates about his career, dating and the recent loss of his mother to cancer.

Determined to Stand, Glide, Walk!

On October 28, 2006, Brian Wood was in a severe car accident that resulted in a C2/C3 Spinal Cord Injury. He has a neck fusion from C4 to C7 and has since regained some arm function and a lot of sensation. While in rehab, Brian was introduced to standing. "I liked using the EasyStand Glider in rehab; the additional leg movement gave me a better workout, so that is what I decided to purchase!" Following rehab, Brian got his first EasyStand Glider, which was later destroyed in a fire. He is slowly replacing the things that he lost, including his Glider. Brian hopes to resume his standing program, and one day, regain his ability to walk. "My motivation is simple ... I want to get out of this chair and walk again!"

Becoming Ms. Wheelchair Minnesota 2011

Being a C-1 C-2 quadriplegic paralyzed from the neck down and on a ventilator can be challenging at times. I've always loved teaching and helping people, but after my car accident it became prevalent that this is what I wanted to do the rest of my life. When I received an e-mail about the Ms. Wheelchair Minnesota 2011 contest, I immediately felt the need to fill out an application. I was elated when I received a call saying that I was in the contest, April 11, 2011 couldn't come soon enough! That day, I put on a new outfit and headed to Running Aces Harness Park with butterflies in my stomach. When they called my name as the winner of Ms. Wheelchair Minnesota 2011, I was shocked but overjoyed! I went to the front of the stage to receive my sash and crown. I was bombarded with people and flashing lights. I learned a little bit about what celebrities go through with the paparazzi.

EasyStand StrapStand Video: Product, Usage & Benefits

This four minute video about the EasyStand StrapStand explains how standing can help prevent the secondary complications of prolonged wheelchair use. It highlights product benefits like standing clients directly from their wheelchair - no transfers required, and includes footage of clients using the stander. Video also shows each part of the standard unit and all of the options that can be ordered to customize it for each client's specific needs, like the popular Swing-Out Legs option for clients who use wider wheelchairs. It ends with a section about which options are recommended for use in a multi-user setting. This video is a must watch for clinicians who work with clients who are not capable of transferring or if patient lifting is a concern for their staff members.
