Mobile Standing
On The Move-A Mobile Stander at School by Stephenie Labandz, PT

At the last meeting, she started to cry. One of the sweetest, toughest women one of my students is lucky enough to call "Mom" was having a tough time. The news the doctor had, had broken her heart. "He's never going to walk." He CAN walk. It requires a walker, extra time, standby assistance for safety, and a whole lot of encouragement to focus on the task at hand, but walking is unlikely to be his most independent and functional means of getting himself from point A to point B. "I'll do everything I can to help." The team had been doing a great job trying to sneak mobility into the school day. But, where could we squeeze in a little more? What if he could he could move around independently in a standing position? What if I just figured out a way for him to achieve great therapeutic and social benefits? What if all he needs is a mobile stander? WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS SOONER??!?!?!

Christopher Reeve Talks About His Wheelchair on Sesame Street

Watch how Christopher Reeve explains his wheelchair to Big Bird and Zoe, with his young son Will at his side. This video is just one example of what the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation has done to help educate kids and adults on spinal cord injury. Altimate Medical is excited to have reached our goal of donating $3000 to the Reeve Foundation for our 2010 holiday contribution. Thank you to all of our Facebook fans for helping to make it happen!

Standing "Smiles"-Articles on Standing in School

"A smile is worth a thousand words" is a great American Proverb that we have all heard a time or two! I think most of us would agree that seeing a smile on the face of a child holds an extra place in our hearts. For many kids who use wheelchairs for mobility, standing is something special to them...out of the ordinary you could say. If you are a therapist or parent considering a standing frame for your special needs child, you may want to implement the standing program during their school day for the medical, cognitive, and play benefits! Here are two great articles written by physical therapists who work in a school setting, They share their experiences with using standing therapy with kids during the school day.

Don't Just Sit There... Seminars in 2011

"Don't Just Sit There..." is an assistive technology seminar on weight bearing and movement presented by Altimate Medical's Andy Hicks or Peter Wankelman. The "Don't Just Sit There..." seminar is being offered as a 1-Hour Bonus Seminar to Freedom Designs' 1-day "Simply Seating" or 2-day "Seating: Bottom to Top" seminar. Attendees will understand why children need frequent position changes, how movement benefits their cognitive and physical development, the problems associated with Metabolic Syndrome and how movement can help maintain their overall health into adulthood. Consider attending a seminar in your area and suggest it to your colleagues. If you would like a copy of the 2011 seminar brochure mailed to you, please email bryanne@easystand.com.
