Recipe of the Month

For the next month, you can access for free a Health Action Group on Sunday’s at 9:30 Central Time. Consider calling in if you have questions or if you have tips about what you’ve found to be helpful in the quest for better health. Sometimes people need to hear my opinion as a physician. But sometimes, people need to hear about your success to regain hope from the testimony of someone who’s recently made an improvement.

I’ll cover a short 2 minute topic to open the discussion, then I’ll open the mike to whoever has questions or comments. Hopefully, this will be a useful mastermind group to inspire us all to do what we know to work and find new ideas that others have discovered. I often learn from my patients, so I’m looking forward to teaching and learning.

You should, in 5 minutes of reading this newsletter, find something you can do today to find better health, or I failed with this note and only cluttered your in-box with more spam.  Every letter will also offer something for free.

  • Increased abdominal fat from diabetes type 2 is related to testosterone levels and can be improved with replacement: but, the correct test must be done to find the problem.

  • The misinformation that's been spouted for the past 20 years...
  • Huge mistake that's been spouted by physicians for years needs to be squelched now..."get your heart rate up for 20 or 30 minutes 2 or 3 times a week" and that's all you need to do....BULL!!! Finally the truth is starting to come out in the medical research. It's not about heart rate...it's about miles (at any speed). Here' s a recent article that's coming around to proving what I noticed 20 years ago working at the YMCA...it's not the diet...anybody who walks 3 miles a day every day will have a normal weight. But most people will use all their will power to endure a restrictive diet but never get around to the walking (partly because they dread the pain of getting their heart rate to a certain point (which is not necessary). Go for miles at any speed and enjoy the walk. Here' the latest news report that supports this strategy.

  • We're told to look at the heavens to find peace. In poetry, a literary tool used is to pull back from the earth and look at the moon or the stars to gain perspective. Here's a computer animation of that exercise.

    An exercise in peace.
  • The cheapest place for the most important health tool
  • The main tool needed for good health: a good pair of running shoes. A patient of mine (who lost from 210 pounds down to 145 pounds) recommended this site to me as the cheapest place for good shoes.

If you've found a site you think may help others, let me know and I'll check it out for use in a future letter.

Cheap place to buy running shoes.

  • New Research in which You might Participate
  • Presently making arrangements to begin another study with Small Pox Vaccine. I consider it a great patriotic contribution by anyone who participates in this study. If you're interested in participating and live within 200 miles of Mobile, Alabama; please respond by sending me an email message with simply "small pox" in the subject. I will keep you up- to-date as the study progresses. As a chemist (before medical school), I helped design instrumentation now used for the early detection of chemical warfare agents. I think that civilians can contribute in important ways to our national defense and support democracy and our soldiers at war. Consider at least keeping up with the progress of this study. There's also some compensation for travel time and trouble that will be paid to those who participate (amount still being negotiated).

  • Here's a simple little breakfast that's easy and quick to prepare and tastes great. It's also heart healthy (lowers cholesterol and blood pressure with the extra fiber) and only about 280 calories: Put one package of instant oatmeal in a bowl. Add 2 to 3 egg whites and 1/3 cup skim milk. Put in microwave oven for 1.5 to 2 minutes (or stir on low on the stove top). Take out of microwave and stir in on packet of Splenda and a pinch of cinnamon.

This dish gives you the added benefit of a low glycemic index which keeps hunger down for about 2.5 to 3 hours after eating it. And, the fiber helps with digestion/constipation.

  • How to go for a walk every day and enjoy every step
  • When I see people use their treadmill for a clothes hanger or watch overweight people walking faster than me and sweating and grimacing during their walks, I want to spend the day with them and show them how to learn how to enjoy walking.

After walking or jogging almost daily for the past 30 years, I picked up a few tricks for learning to enjoy the habit and make time for the habit. In this 72- minute CD, I share some of those tips with you.
