Governor's Grants Conference 2011: Leading the Way Through Best Practices

The Governor's Grants Conference is designed for local grants managers and nonprofits, as well as state grants and fiscal managers. The opening session will feature elected officials discussing federal funding issues that impact all grantees. Attendees will then choose from multiple breakout sessions that address different topics presented by federal agency employees, consultants, nonprofits, and colleagues who have successfully navigated through many applications for private and governmental grants. The TD Charitable Foundation's 2011 Housing for Everyone grant competition is about "Building for the Future". Applications must focus on any one of three areas and should highlight the ways in which funding will provide the opportunity in the future to expand the availability of and/or access to safe affordable housing. Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant Program
Application deadline:  October 14, 2011
At a time when schools and community groups are struggling to make ends meet, Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation recognizes that we must increase our focus on basic, one-time project needs. Any individual public K-12 school or nonprofit parent group associated with that public K-12 school is eligible to apply for funding between $2,000 and $5,000. For more information...

Reinventing America's Legacy Cities: Strategies for Cities Losing Population

Traditional thinking about urban policy and planning, with its relentless focus on growth, doesn't offer much in the way of vocabulary or framework for discussing "legacy cities" -- a term used to identify those American cities with rich histories and assets that have struggled to stay relevant in an ever-changing global economy. In April 2011, the Center for Community Progress and the Center for Sustainable Urban Development co-sponsored the 110th American Assembly in Detroit to focus on building strong policies to assist "legacy cities". Download the report here...

Stable Home Ownership in a Turbulent Economy: Delinquencies and Foreclosures Remain Low in Community Land Trusts

This study examined mortgage delinquency and foreclosure rates among the owner-occupants of resale-restricted houses and condominiums in community land trusts (CLTs) across the United States and compared CLT results to rates of delinquency and foreclosure among the owner-occupants of conventional market-rate housing reported by the Mortgage Bankers Association's National Delinquency Survey. The study also explored practices and policies of CLTs that may help to explain their better performance. From the Center for Community Progress 
Now accepting proposals for conference sessions!
The fourth national Reclaiming Vacant Properties Conference is set for June 20-22 in New Orleans. The theme is "Remaking America for the 21st Century".
Conference sessions and activities will explore a wide variety of topics related to the challenges and opportunities presented by foreclosed, abandoned, blighted and other problem properties. This year there is more of an emphasis to place these ideas in the broader context of the nation's economic recovery.

In the News...
Three DHCD Projects Awarded by NAHRO!
Three DHCD projects received Awards of Merit at the summer conference of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) in Louisville, KY on July 28.
The projects honored include the Miller's Court development in Baltimore City, the National Park Seminary Apartments in Silver Spring, and the Maryland offices of the Allegany County Human Resources Development Commission in Cumberland.
