Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier and Happier
By Edward Glaeser
In this book the author, an urban economist, travels through history and around the globe to reveal the hidden workings of cities and how they bring out the best in humankind. It turns out that even the worst cities confer surprising benefits on the people who flock to them, including better health and more jobs than the surrounding rural areas. He discovers why some older industrial cities are dying while others thrive. Through analysis and argument, Glaeser reminds us why we should nurture our cities or suffer consequences that will hurt us all, no matter where we live. Learn more about this book...

Special Announcement
from BNC Senior Program Officer Sally Scott |
Dear Colleagues,
I wanted to let you know that our family is moving to Iowa City in late June. My husband Jimmy will be the Chair of the Psychiatry Department at the University of Iowa. I will be taking the summer off to get us settled, and then starting work in September, possibly with the University of Iowa Public Policy Center. My last day of work at the Baltimore Neighborhood Collaborative will be June 10.
Of course leaving Baltimore after 22 years will be difficult. I will miss the people and places I have been very lucky to get to know over the years. The work that we all do is remarkably challenging, with both overwhelming problems and incredible opportunities. Having capable and supportive colleagues has made all the difference.
Take Care, Sally
