NEW: Intermediate English Constructed Response Questions

Castle Learning's English Curriculum Department has released the first set of constructed response writing prompts in the course: Intermediate English. The 49 extended response questions accompany the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Found in the constructed response section of the Intermediate English database, the new extended response questions are meant to accompany the more than 160 multiple choice questions previously available.
The majority of these new constructed response questions reflect many of the Common Core initiatives. The questions ask students to refer back to the text, use textual evidence, and write detailed explanations. Sample answers are provided so students will know if they are on the right track. The constructed response questions range in length and style. While many of the questions ask for formal written responses, students will also see a variety of graphic organizers and list type questions.
UPDATE: English, New Historical Documents Section and Writing Prompts

Castle Learning has released a set of Great American Historical Documents for use at the high school level. The new unit consists of four famous American documents:
▪ Ain't I a Woman? by Sojourner Truth ▪ I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr. ▪ Letter From a Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King, Jr. ▪ The Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln |
Sojourner Truth (c.1870) |
Both multiple choice and constructed response questions are included for each of the documents. Questions ask students to refer back to the text for answers and encourage a higher level of thinking. The writing prompts used in the constructed response questions were authored to align with Common Core initiatives. The questions consistently ask students to use textual evidence, explain answers clearly and concisely. Sample answers are provided so students will know what type of answer is appropriate.
The documents can be used as stand-alone assignments or paired with Castle Learning's Literature Sets in either English or Intermediate English. Castle Learning Literature Sets that work well with this unit from the Intermediate Series include: The Watsons Go to Birmingham; Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry; A Raisin in the Sun; and The Diary of Anne Frank. Also, from the English literature series: Their Eyes Were Watching God; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; The House on Mango Street; Night; and To Kill a Mockingbird.
Castle Learning has also added constructed response/writing prompt questions for the these works of Edgar Allan Poe: The Pit and the Pendulum; The Raven; The Tell-Tale Heart; and Annabel Lee. Some of the new constructed response questions ask students to use more than one of Poe's pieces to answer the question.
