ReadSpeaker Logo

The ReadSpeaker partnership has been active for a few months now and the Castle Learning Customer Support Team is always eager to hear feedback from our users. Recently an educator assured the team that the text-to-speech tool is beneficial to students:

I just needed to thank you for your new audio access!  I would often have to read all questions and answers out loud to my learning disabled students.  Now, I can mix questions up and students can work independently with their head phones! Thank you so much for improving an already wonderful product!

Maritza S., Teacher

What a great comment; thank you!  If you have a success story or feedback to share with the team at Castle Learning, please email marketing@castlelearning.com. Helping students achieve success is what it's all about!

eInstructionLimited Computer Lab Access?
Student Response Systems Help!

The Castle Learning team has announced a newly formed partnership with the leading provider in student response systems--eInstruction®.

The Castle Learning development team has been working closely with eInstruction® to build an integrated, easy-to-use interface for the two technologies to "talk" to one another seamlessly!  Using student response systems ("clickers") gives teachers and students an opportunity to use Castle Learning even when the computer lab isn't available.

An instructional document has been created to assist in the setup and implementation of this new feature.  Please be sure to read through the document and follow the installation and setup instructions prior to use. You can locate the document by clicking the eInstruction Student Response Systems link in the Documents section of your Castle Learning account.

webinarsNew Option for Castle Learning Training

Webinars!

In addition to onsite training and video tutorials, Castle Learning now offers Webinars. Each month a variety of Webinars are offered in short blocks of time ranging from 30-40 minutes. Currently, teachers can learn how to set up classes, create assignments, view reports for data driven instruction and write their own questions. Here's how schools are already using Castle Learning's Webinar Training:

  • Individuals at School or Home. Many educators are finding that Webinars an efficient time saver for learning how to use Castle Learning at their own computers.
  • Groups in Computer Lab. Some schools are hosting the Webinar in a computer lab to allow several teachers to view the session at the same time.
  • Workable Short Sessions. One school reported since their teachers only have 30 minute blocks of time (not the full 90 minutes needed for onsite training) that Webinars are a perfect solution.
  • Customized Sessions. Webinars can be customized to meet your school's needs. Don't hesitate to ask how you can request customized Webinar sessions for your school

For further information about upcoming Webinars or to schedule custom Webinars for your school, please contact the training representative for your territory or contact 1-800-345-7606 and dial extension 3 for Training.

NEW: Intermediate English Constructed Response Questions

more coming soonCastle Learning's English Curriculum Department has released the first set of constructed response writing prompts in the course: Intermediate English. The 49 extended response questions accompany the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Found in the constructed response section of the Intermediate English database, the new extended response questions are meant to accompany the more than 160 multiple choice questions previously available.

The majority of these new constructed response questions reflect many of the Common Core initiatives. The questions ask students to refer back to the text, use textual evidence, and write detailed explanations. Sample answers are provided so students will know if they are on the right track. The constructed response questions range in length and style. While many of the questions ask for formal written responses, students will also see a variety of graphic organizers and list type questions.

UPDATE: English, New Historical Documents Section and Writing Prompts
more coming soon
Castle Learning has released a set of Great American Historical Documents for use at the high school level. The new unit consists of four famous American documents:

    ▪    Ain't I a Woman? by Sojourner Truth
    ▪    I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr.
    ▪    Letter From a Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King, Jr.
    ▪    The Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln

Both multiple choice and constructed response questions are included for each of the documents. Questions ask students to refer back to the text for answers and encourage a higher level of thinking. The writing prompts used in the constructed response questions were authored to align with Common Core initiatives. The questions consistently ask students to use textual evidence, explain answers clearly and concisely. Sample answers are provided so students will know what type of answer is appropriate.

The documents can be used as stand-alone assignments or paired with Castle Learning's Literature Sets in either English or Intermediate English. Castle Learning Literature Sets that work well with this unit from the Intermediate Series include: The Watsons Go to Birmingham; Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry; A Raisin in the Sun; and The Diary of Anne Frank. Also, from the English literature series: Their Eyes Were Watching God; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; The House on Mango Street; Night; and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Castle Learning has also added constructed response/writing prompt questions for the these works of Edgar Allan Poe: The Pit and the Pendulum; The Raven; The Tell-Tale Heart; and Annabel Lee. Some of the new constructed response questions ask students to use more than one of Poe's pieces to answer the question.

Answers to Your Questions

QUESTION: I don't have the time to sort through questions to create my own assignments.  Does Castle Learning have pre-built assignments I can use?

ANSWER: Absolutely!  Teachers have access to the Public Assignments section, which includes Castle Learning assignments, as well as assignments that have been made public by other teachers in a specific district.  Castle Learning has also developed a number of assignments specifically targeted to address Common Core initiatives.  To access the Public Assignments, follow these steps:

  1. From the Teacher Home Page click the link labeled Assignments
  2. Click the button labeled Create From Public Assignments
  3. Using the tree system, click the + sign next to a course area and continue expanding the selection until you see a list of assignments.  Castle Assignments are assignments created by Castle Learning.  District Assignments are assignments that have been created and made public by other teachers within the district.
  4. Click the title of a Public Assignment to preview the questions in the assignment.
  5. Check the box(es) next to the assignment(s) you would like to import, then click the button at the bottom of the page labeled Import.
  6. You will be returned to the Assignments Page and the assignments will now appear in your list of available assignments.

QUESTION:  As an Administrator, I published an assignment to Public Assignments. I notice that there is a delete option. What happens if I delete that public assignment?  Is the assignment deleted for everyone or only for me? If it just deletes the assignment for me, is there a way to delete it for everyone?

ANSWER: Once a user has made an assignment Public, all teachers in the district have the ability to import questions from that Public Assignment into an assignment of their own.

As an Administrator account holder, you can remove the assignment from the Public Assignment List by clicking the trash can icon in the "Actions" column of the Public Assignment Report on the Administrator's Report page. At that point, no one else can import questions from that assignment into one of their own. However, if teachers have already created an assignment from the Public Assignment and imported questions from it, the newly created assignment will not be removed when you delete the Public Assignment from the Administrator's Public Assignment Report.
