A snowy thank you

It's at times like this - with snow simply pouring down on all sides of me --  that I wish I were that wizard of a flash animation card-designer, Jaqueline Lawson.  I would pull out all the stops.  An amazing snow globe glimmering on your screen that could simply stop you from ever taking your eyes off my merveille.  Lights and music:  evanescent beauty.

Evanescent in spirit only bird

But my real merveille is anything but virtual. T
he Time In Children's Arts Initiative - which I founded nearly 5 years ago with your help - glistens and glimmers, but its evanescence is in spirit only.

For bringing whole classes of the youngest, most at-risk children out of Harlem and Morrisania public school classrooms and into the world of the living arts, not as a one-time treat, but as part of the kids' regular school day, every week of the school year, is a nose to the grindstone job.

Thanks to your support this past year, some of the city's youngest and most underserved children have had the opportunity to visit 16 of the most provocative, exciting museum and gallery shows last year - from Tino Sehgal at the Guggenheim to the Late Monet at Gagosian.  They were able to spend 3 months preparing to attend the final dress rehearsal of Shostakovich's Nose at the Metropolitan Opera, and when not out on the town, they could be found in our studio, gloriously bathed in glitter, paint and pastels, and happily immersed in a world of operas.

Voiceless and Vulnerable

Without Time In, however, these kids make their way in the world with very little.  A vulnerable, voiceless ibrahimpopulation, at-risk, underserved children are heard and seen only too late, as disaffected adolescents.

Little by little their talents fade, their hopes and optimism atrophy, and only the most resilient children continue to move forward.

Why sustain a picture of failure?  Why not just step forward and make concrete changes in what we know is wrong?

That we CAN make a difference.

The Time In Children's Arts Initiative
is a radical, hands-on, life-changing opportunity
for some of New York's youngest
and most
at-risk kids.

Laughing, dancing, singing, making art, learning operas, gallery hops and museum visits  with 220 at-risk flesh and blood children every single week of the school year is about as far from virtual reality as one can get.

Real work, with real people -- who just so happen to be kids.

What today seems unimaginable, tomorrow is possible.

Ignorance and violence replaced
by
thoughtfulness, intelligence,
awareness
&
sensitivity.
