Riverside Area Home Sales Show Continued Signs of Improvement in August
On September 14th Data Quick, a recognized leader in the property information industry, released their monthly home sales numbers, showing last month as the strongest August in home sales since 2006. Across Southern California, sale prices were up nearly 11% over August 2011 and over 14% in sheer volume for that same period. "August was the strongest month for home sales so far this year, and the strongest for an August in six years. That's really saying something given the drop in low-end sales, especially foreclosure resales. Much of the pickup in activity reflects a continuation of trends we've seen for months, like the unleashing of pent-up demand in move-up markets and high levels of cash and investor buying. It will be interesting to see at what point cash purchases, which still account for close to a third of all sales, start to fade. In the meantime, strong seasonal forces should be kicking in now. Absent an unusual surge in demand this fall, sales will taper off over the next few months," said John Walsh, DataQuick president. (Read more...) |

At the League of California Cities Annual Conference and Expo held in San Diego, California, Riverside received two distinguished recognitions.
Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge was recognized by the League with the 2012 Past President's Lifetime Achievement Award. This particular award category was established in 1996 and is given annually to an individual who has made a significant and unique contribution to the state or his or her community over an extended period of years. Preference is given to nominees with close ties to cities; however, nominees may also be selected from the categories of local government leaders, academics/teachers, authors, media producers, community leaders and state or national leaders.

The Kowal family produces the stuff that dreams are made on: mattresses.
Not your mass-produced numbers, but customized, upscale products, retailing for as much as $12,000.
Kowal Enterprises, a $1 million annual business, which advertises little, primarily sells its all-natural and organic mattresses to manufacturers and stores in Northern California, where green is gold.
"It's a struggle," acknowledged Emil Kowal, 65, who started the business in 1976 selling waterbeds. "Times are tough. We're small, but we've survived."
"We're just a small manufacturer, not one of the big S's," he said, alluding to Simmons, Sealy and Serta. "We're about a quality of life, making luxury products." (Read more...)
