Recipe of the Month

May brings about fresh vegetables like tomatoes, spinach and basil. Here's a low carbohydrate, high protein recipe to make to start your day off right!

Ingredients:

  • 6 eggs
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon fresh basil leaves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup fresh spinach (torn in pcs)
  • ⅓ cup fresh sliced tomatoes
Directions:
Beat eggs in a bowl. Add the Parmesan cheese, garlic, basil, salt, pepper and nutmeg; mix well. Set aside. Spray a 9 or 10-inch nonstick skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Heat over medium heat until hot. Add spinach; cover and cook 2 to 3 minutes or until spinach is slightly wilted, stirring once or twice. Watch carefully to prevent burning. Spread the tomato slices evenly in the skillet over the spinach. Pour egg mixture over top. Cover; cook over low heat for 12 to 15 minutes or until eggs are set. Cut into wedges and serve warm.

Serves 4.

Greetings!

It's National Women's Week: April 13-19th. During this week we would like to promote health to not only women, but men as well. The theme for this week is "It's your time." Here are some healthful tips on how to make your health a top priority:

Chamomile tea can be used to fight acne topically as a spot treatment, or internally for stress reduction and relaxation

Get a check-up. Go for preventative screenings!

Get active. Go for a brisk walk, walk/run a 5k, create your own garden with fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. Choose to go-green & go healthy!

Eat healthy. Make sure your plate is colorful with half of your plate being veggies! Be sure to include a variety of fruits and vegetables at each meal with different colors, textures and flavors for good nutrition!

Relax. Enjoy a nice quiet meditation, sleep well and manage your stress through reading a book, writing a book, taking a yoga class or having tea with friends. Try chamomile tea (if consumed regularly, it can be as useful as some sleep aids). This tea helps you to relax and also has anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties. It can be used topically & orally to help reduce insomnia and other sleep disorders, anxiety and panic attacks, muscle twitches, wounds, burns, and scrapes, skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, chickenpox, and diaper rash & stomach problems such as menstrual cramps, stomach flu and ulcers.

Keep Healthy & Stay Away from those Unhealthy Behaviors. You know what they are: smoking, uncontrolled drinking, avoiding safety precautions & eating in excess of unhealthy food choices.

Women are now spending over $1,500.00 for an invasive process to lose a drastic amount of weight in a short period of time for their weddings.
Other women are trying "detox programs" that use as low as 500 calorie diets to lose weight and they aren't always able to keep it off. Why, you ask, because diets don't work - healthy lifestyle changes do.

A quick fix weight loss is not always permanent or healthy. Gradual weight loss is a smart & healthy way to lose weight and keep it off. Most of these women are not learning a healthy lifestyle approach of eating a variety at their meals and including active exercise.

Here are some helpful tips to ensure a steady weight loss & to healthfully cleanse your body:

  • Have a variety of fruits & vegetables at each meal.
  • Juicing is a great way to start your morning with the addition of some added protein from eggs or toast with all natural peanut butter! Try carrots, kiwi, apples & fresh ginger to add a little kick in your step in the morning.
  • Make sure to include lean meats/low fat protein substitutes.
  • Try high human biological value proteins such as eggs, skinless chicken breast, poultry, cod, haddock, tofu, beans & lentils and more.
  • Chew your food slowly and sip in between meals to ensure satiety.
  • Take your time between bites, and make sure to hydrate. This way your brain tells your stomach it's satisfied and vice versa.
  • Drink up. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will help to cleanse your body of toxins and hydrates you!
  • Relax and De-stress. Let yourself have 20 minutes of peace and quiet daily, air out your mind and decompress. Stress increases the stress hormone cortisol which increase our appetite can lead to weight gain our appetite to increase and we eat more and gain weight in our mid section. This weight gain also puts one at higher risk for insulin sensitivity.
  • Exercise at least 30-60 minutes most days. Go for a bike ride, walk at an outdoor track or sign up for a workout class.

Practicing healthy lifestyle behaviors will not only ensure a healthy body but a healthy mind as well. It's your body, chose to make the right decisions with it.

MedTeam Success Story
"You guys are wonderful. Even though I started well over a year ago, you helped so much to reach my goals, and get me to looking fabulous in my wedding dress! ... I am still motivated every day to make healthy choices! Your approach goes much deeper than just following a plan. By following a plan and having accountability, I was able to gain self discipline, really watch the portion sizes, and learn what it means to have a healthy balance. As they say, everything in moderation including moderation. If you have a treat once in awhile, that's okay! And going in for weekly appointments, I never felt ashamed if I indulged one day or maybe overdid it on Thanksgiving - whatever the case, you pick up and continue on with your goals in mind- MedTeam provides that great support without making you feel bad about your choices. While it is important to follow the instructions and plan from the practitioners to allow for the best results, and it can be tough work at first, nobody is perfect - MedTeam keeps it real and gives it's patients the tools they need to be successful. One thing I am proud of since I lost 30 pounds, is my ability to run a 5k-never in my life did I imagine myself doing running for exercise but last summer I completed my first 5K. MedTeam really has that ripple effect where one small victory leads to another and then another. Thank you guys for all that you do."
