Maya Royberg Feature Client of the Month
Maya's Pilates Story I was born with a passion for Movement and Dance. I immigrated from the former Soviet Union in 1978, a place where a good life and dreams are kept in ones heart. Dancing was reserved for special occasions and celebrations. Upon coming to this country with my family, I found freedom and movement. I started exercising regularly by mid-life. I tried a little bit of everything and finally found peace and home in Ballroom Dancing and Pilates. I was extremely lucky to find a dance studio and trainer that has given me strength, courage, and confidence. It has not been an easy road. I started dancing with the realization that I have severe physical set backs. Aaron, my dance instructor, pointed out that one hip is higher than the other: I have a turtle neck, noodle arms, chicken hands, and zero balance. I was ready to quit before I started! Quitting is not my nature, I have passion and perseverance. I pushed forward, even though many days I found myself criticizing every movement and wanting so badly to give up. After many years of hard work, my posture and my disposition changed. Aaron suggested that I look to Pilates to enhance my dance workouts. This is where Laura and Tammy came into my life. Through the Fletcher method of Pilates I have improved my breathing, squeezing, and smile line. Every workout is filled with laughter and hard work. The effective core strengthening training is changing my body and improved my grace and endurance on the dance floor. I am so grateful that Dance and Pilates are a regular part of my life. Thank you to the team at Lone Star Pilates. My Name is Maya, and I am going to be a Dancer!

Pilates Insights
What is the most interesting thing you have learned about Joseph Pilates?
Program of study girls share their answers to this question.
Robin Tefft: I find it fascinating that Joseph Pilates insisted on men scrubbing their skin with a wire brush as part of their health and fitness routine. There is some evidence today that brushing the skin stimulates the nervous system and has therapeutic benefit (although I think Pilates' technique is more extreme).
Dana Runge: "We retire too early and we die too young, our prime of life should be in the 70's and old age should not come until we are almost 100." Joseph Pilates
This quote of Joseph's stands out the most for me. We have been working out 3-5 hours a day, 6 days a week. When I think that I can't possibly move anymore, I turn to look at Joyce moving right there with us. At 70!!!! That is why I LOVE Pilates and what it stands for! MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT all working together! Age means nothing in Pilates. I can only hope some day I will be a 70 year young woman, in my prime moving on the Cadillac!
Joyce Knapick: I love his scientific approach to a holistic development of the mind and body together with his attention to the small muscles that support the development of the larger muscles.
Dena Dalton: "Remember, too, that "Rome was not built in a day," and that PATIENCE and PERSISTENCE are vital facilities in the ultimate successful accomplishment of any endeavor." In studying the life of Joseph Pilates I discovered that he absolutely lived and embodied the essence of those words. Read his early (pre World War I) history. If you believe people can rise above and beyond their immediate circumstances, his life was a true testament to the creative spirit of the human race. A man before is time for sure and thank goodness!
Mara Tamez: In Joseph Pilates' book Return to Life, he said, "One of the major results of Contrology is gaining the master of your mind over the complete control of your body." This is what I have to focus on when I am practicing.
Sometimes I think "oh it is really difficult to perform the exercise properly, this is really hard, I can't do it, then I realize that I need to say to myself "yes I can do it, just focus on where the movement comes from and what I want to accomplish.
Joseph said: "Contrology begins with mind control over muscle"
Nancy McElreath: I've learned so much from Joseph Pilates and his work but the most important thing I've learned is how important the spine is and how important it is to take care of it. Most of us look at ourselves as fat or skinny, tall or short, lean or limp and we forget that our health goes far deeper than the surface. The spine creates mobility it allows us to run with our kids, dance the night away, or roll like a ball. Joseph came up with his movements with the spine in mind and thus created the spinal mechanics. As Joseph says your're only as young as your spine, so let's keep moving! |
