Greetings!
You know the expression "You are what you eat." A casual interpretation of that bit of wisdom usually reminds us to eat in healthy ways and avoid junk food (and thoughts) to be rewarded with good health. In Ayurveda the wisdom of "You are what you eat" is more subtle and powerful. Fresh, clean food prepared with love directly influences our consciousness and feelings and can fortify each and every cell within us with natural, birthright intelligence. In this state of heightened cellular intelligence our energy is vital, our health is radiant, our being is joyful.
Spices, often used in seed form, contain concentrated forms of nature's intelligence rising up from the underlying field of consciousness, also known as the quantum field. Think about it. Most foods begin to deteriorate as soon as they are picked. Seeds hold their potency and productive blueprint for more than a year to enable planting and new growth. In this issue we explore the value of these high impact, curiously intelligent food sources on your own well being.
Add intelligent spice seeds to your daily diet and sound a healthier tuning fork in your physiology and emotional body. Feel the resonance of intelligence and life force. Enjoy the bliss of fine tuning through the easy practice of adding herbs and spices to your diet.
Live with radiant intention and be well, Rhonda

Your Smart Top 8 Super Spices
In addition to their delicious taste, spices increase the intelligence of nature in your meals. They also help with digestion and assimilation so that you are eating for nourishment rather that quick calorie energy that does not deeply nourish.
-
Cardamom is sweet and pungent. It promotes digestion and is good for the heart. Cardamom improves the smell of breath and relieves gas and bloating. It also has been used as both an aphrodisiac and for obesity
- Cinnamon is a rich source of antioxidants, has anti- inflammatory properties, eases digestion, and may even reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels. It stimulates blood flow and is a herbal remedy for poor circulation. Cinnamon is considered helpful for weight loss.
- Cloves are anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal. cloves have been studied for use in aiding detoxification from environmental pollutants.
- Coriander seeds (from the cilantro plant) have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities. Coriander soothes the stomach and relieves bloating. Coriander oil is a natural remedy for arthritis relief.
- Cumin is a traditional herbal remedy as a diuretic (helps the body shed water), relieves diarrhea and bowel spasms, relieves morning sickness, and eases carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Fennel Seed is not only loaded with powerful antioxidants but also contains fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamin C. It is believed to boost the immune system, reduce blood pressure, and aid in detoxification of the body. It contains compounds that help relieve smooth muscle spasms, which in effect, helps ease abdominal cramping and spasms. Fennel is also a mild appetite suppressant.
- Ginger has many proven uses such as naturally treats nausea from morning and motion sickness, plus anti- inflammatory properties for muscle and joint pain. It also has a diaphoretic property (causes sweating) and is good to cleanse and detoxify the body, stimulate circulation, and ease bronchitis and congestion. Try a slice of fresh ginger in your spice water (recipe right) or cook with fresh grated ginger.
- Turmeric is the king of medicinal herbs. It promotes healthy cell replication. Turmeric contains the flavanoid curcumin which is known for anti-inflammatory properties. This great all-around spice may relieve the effects of chemotherapy, improve cognitive function, detox the liver and boost immunity. Additionally, U.S. researchers reported that curcumin, found in the spice turmeric, interferes with melanoma cells. More
To activate the dormant intelligence of spices, lightly sauté them in ghee (clarified butter) or extra virgin olive oil and then add them to your recipes. Ayurvedic spices offer rich and varied aroma and flavor which stimulate digestive juices to enhance metabolism and help to balance the doshas. They can transform simple dishes into feasts for all your senses, providing fulfillment and contentment from meals.

Your Inner Physician
Our bodies are wise miracles really...if we give them a chance. Just think of all the ways our physiology functions each and every minute. The intelligent version of all of our tissues and organs and processes can keep us abundantly healthy. Our inner physician knows how to engage our immune response, which chemicals in finely balanced combinations to release and with proper timing. Our part is to nourish that innate intelligence and to cultivate deep energy reserves to support this action.
But, if we are eating dumb foods (processed, leftovers, wrong for our doshas) or our lifestyle habits detract from our health, then our inner wisdom and resources may not be there for us when we need them most. Our inner physician enables the body to repair, balance and fine-tune itself to higher degrees of wellness and efficiency. With the knowledge of Ayurveda we can make a few smart decisions to do our part in this miracle experience.
Although Ayurveda is helpful to treat manifest conditions, primarily Ayurveda is useful to prevent serious conditions from arising by instead engaging with long-standing healthy diet and lifestyle orientations. As an Ayurvedic practitioner my health has been better than ever but not perfect. I recently had the ego - checking experience of needing to cancel an Ayurveda workshop due to a bout of the flu. We are all figuring this out as we go...doing a few things here and there to upgrade our health. One quick way to smarten up and nourish your inner physician is to cook with spices and drink hot spice water. Small actions have big effects, I believe, especially when we can rely on the long lever of Ayurveda knowledge. "give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world." Archimedes |
