Greetings!
What a summer. We expect the heat....but this dryness??? More than the land has been parched. Often our Pitta, the dosha of fire, gets aggravated in the summer. I have written of ways to cool Pitta in the last two issues. This summer I am discovering many more people with Vata imbalances predominating. Vata is marked by dryness. Proper hydration affects our digestion, skin, energy level, and mood.
The theme for this month is queeeench. So jump right in. Ahhhh.
Live with radiant intention and be well, Rhonda

Your Thirst Is Talking to You
We may lose about 10-15 cups of fluid each day through urine, sweat, bowel movements, eating a salty or dry diet, or making our kidneys flush in overdrive to rid us of toxins we have imbibed. Exercise, illness and most certainly the weather can have an affect on water loss. Water vapor in the breath alone is responsible for almost half of our water loss.
What Is the Thirst Signal? Losing fluid causes the blood volume and blood pressure to drop, signaling thirst. Sometimes when we get that signal we misread it as hunger. In between meals first consider that your signal of needing something might just be your thirst talking to you.
"I Just Don't Feel Like Drinking Water, So What." Dehydration is an e arly factor of many dis-ease conditions of the body. Dehydration can start as fatigue, depression, poor digestion, or sluggish blood circulation and lead to even more serious conditions. In addition to the sensation of thirst, also look for these signs of dehydration:
- Dry or sticky mouth
- Little or no sweat
- Dry eyes
- Constipation or dry pellet stools
- Low urine amount or concentrated yellow color [clear urine may mean too much water, healthy urine is typically a light yellow color]
- Low energy
- Irritability
How Much Water? Like all of Ayurveda, it depends on you, your constitution, and your need to balance. However, in general:
Kaphas typically need to drink less water (4-5 glasses) because water is in their constitution and they easily retain water.
Vatas are often chronically dehydrated, and they need to drink more water (8-10glasses) but just drinking lots of water may not be efficient as it may encourage kidney flushing. A wedge of lemon or lime in the water with a pinch of salt helps Vatas to retain more fluid for hydration. Try an herbal licorice root tea. Licorice root is an anti-diuretic and can help Vatas to stay hydrated. Watermelon, on the other hand is diuretic and helps with flushing toxins but may be too drying for Vatas---a little counter-intuitive don't you think?
Pittas lose water and electrolytes easily through sweat, urine, and loose stools so they need to drink a modest amount of water ( 6-8 glasses) and perhaps more when they are exercising and sweating. Notice your balance point for a properly moist system. Honoring it will reward you. Need to know your dosha imbalance? Take the dosha inventory. |

Hydration Problems and Remedies
Hydration is essential for proper digestion as fluids are the medium for enzymatic activity. Without proper hydration the stomach cannot secrete the 2/3 of a liter of hydrochloric acid typically needed to digest a meal.
Here are two common hydration problems with remedies.
Do you feel full after drinking just a little water? This may be due to weak digestion or insufficient acid production in the stomach. You need some fire to get thirsty. To increase digestive capacity, add a wedge of lime, a pinch of salt and a slice of ginger.
Do you have dry skin and cannot quench your thirst even though you drink lots of water. What is going on? The deeper physiology is not getting enough moisture. This occurs when your agni (digestive fire) is low and ama (toxin deposits) blocks the microchannels (shrotas) which carry water to the cells. So the water just passes through superficially.
To cleanse the channels and enhance moisture absorption, Ayurveda recommends boiling the water you drink, This activates the water with heat and brings out its sharp and more penetrating qualities that can cleanse the microchannels of stagnant ama and move more deeply into the physiology. Agni is further enhanced by adding digestive spices to the water.
Here is a great formula for hot spice water:
- 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
- 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/4 tsp coriander seeds all in a quart thermos of boiled water.
- When it is hot out you can let the water cool to room temperature before drinking.

Correction: Clean and Dirty Foods
Last month I gave you a list of Pitta Cooling Foods Clean and Dirty. Sweet potatoes were listed in both columns. Actually sweet potatoes are (more) clean and white potatoes are dirty. Also sweet potatoes are more nutritive so a better choice. |

Hydration Challenge
John Douillard of Lifespa.com suggests making water your only beverage for one month. You can drink hot water and room temperature water. Iced water takes your body's attention to temperature homeostasis and away from digestion. Ayurveda recommends never using ice.
Check out the guidelines for his hydration challenge to drink water as your only beverage for one month.

Ayurveda Lassi for Hydration & Digestion
Why Lassi? Yogurt eaten by itself can clog the channels of the digestive and elimination systems. When you add water and spices to make a lassi, you aid digestion by thinning it and changing the molecular structure. Drink it before or with lunch. Sweet Lassi: Blend to taste: 1 part yogurt 3 parts water Pinches of cardamom, sugar and rosewater Digestive Lassi: Blend to taste: 1 part yogurt 3 parts water Pinches of ginger, cumin, salt and black pepper
