The Long Arc of Ayurveda has returned to Earth!
You are part of a growing number of people drawn to Ayurveda in a world-wide resurgence the past 10 years. Ayurveda is a perennial and universal system of healing and well-being with its origins in India at least 5000 and perhaps as many as 8000 years ago.
There is a whisper in the air that there is a better way to live and Ayurveda is resonating with many as a time-tested, nature-affirmed way to fulfill the promise of that high hope. Ayurveda is full of wisdom and practices to help us to get on track. The core idea of Ayurveda is that by living in balance with nature we are healthy in mind, body, and spirit. We can prevent imbalances from occurring and restore balance when necessary by understanding principles of how nature works and by employing Ayurveda practices based on those principles. The first purpose of Ayurveda is prevention of illness and the second is cure.
Throughout history, civilizations have made remarkable gains when they have added modern knowledge to ancient wisdom in respectful integration. We are at one of those intersections. The long arc of Ayurveda has come back to earth at this time.
The reasons for interest in Ayurveda may vary. Perhaps you want to resolve a particular health problem, or you want more energy, or to be more grounded, or to detox, or a deeper spiritual connection. These needs and more are held in the promise of Ayurveda. Your desires may be pragmatic or ethereal. In the end, Ayurveda attends to both and will serve you well.

Homeostasis
If you exercise for 30 minutes your pulse rate will increase dependent upon how vigorously you exercise and what kind of shape you are in. Then you cool down and your pulse returns to your particular "set point"--what is normal for you. For every process in our body, we have a particular set point that allows us to maintain a constant level of functioning referred to as homeostasis.
We have set points that keep us at a steady internal temperature and that regulate our rate of normal breathing. We have set points in our neurohormonal system related to insulin that govern how much energy from the food we just ate should be available for our immediate needs and how much should be stored as fat for later. Our set points generally work remarkably well.
For example, our set point for weight works fairly well when you think about how many meals we eat in a lifetime and how over or underweight we could be if our system didn't self-regulate. However, when we repeatedly overstress our resources and undernourish our systems, instead of visiting elevated or depressed points, we begin to live there and a new set point.. a new normal is established for us.
This new set point can hold the pattern for high blood pressure, excessive weight, coldness in the body, over or under production of numerous hormones, diabetes, or any number of conditions mild or serious.
Ayurveda, in essence, is about balance that keeps our nature in tune with all of nature. The principles and practices of Ayurveda help us to reboot to the right set point so that the natural law of homeostasis is life supporting for us again. |

Paying Attention to Balance/Imbalance in Our Lives
Balance is key in Ayurveda for our best health. This awareness may be cultivated. Can you answer these questions easily?
1. Select one thing you did or thought or experienced today that disturbed your balance.
2. Now also select one thing today that reinforced your health... that connected you to nature or your nature.
3. Were you aware of the effect at the time you were involved in these experiences? Did they feel like choices or habits or something else?

I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process - an integral function of the universe." -R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983)
