Radiant Health is a Bite Away!

Greetings!
Well, okay, maybe more than one bite away, but small steps and you can feel results quickly. Summer in Michigan, what could be better? We come alive this time of year. With fresh and local vegetables abundantly available, we can build up our health and immune system in the summer to fortify us for the full year ahead.
Ayurveda is all about balance. When one of our doshas becomes excessive, due to diet, behaviors, stress, or the season we are in, we need to temper it,...tame it through diet and lifestyle choices and bring it back into balance. By knowing what foods and spices we need to balance our current imbalances and then making some wise food selections, we digest well, nourish ourselves and enjoy radiant health.

Make Your Own Cool!
Summer is Pitta season. Pitta is the dosha of heat and fire. Pitta controls how we digest food and how we metabolize our experiences and sensory perceptions. Pitta season is from June through September. No matter our dosha constitution or our predominant doshic imbalance, most of us also need to have some balancing strategies for the Ayurveda season we are in. Pitta in balance gives us our drive, goal-orientation, generosity, courage, and passion. Pitta out of balance aggravates our perfectionism, impatience, irritability, and need to control. Which is your preference for summer 2011?
In Ayurveda we look at balance holistically--our diet, our lifestyle habits, how we engage our senses, and how we quiet ourselves to connect with spirit. To balance your Pitta this summer you might consider:
- Stay cool (both physically and mentally)
 - Walk in the moonlight
- Take warm showers instead of hot
- Rub coconut oil on your scalp and soles of your feet at bedtime (this helps with sleeping through the night)
- Eat cooling, sweet, bitter, and astringent foods such as asparagus, leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, cucumber, spinach, melons, milk, and okra. Generally cooked foods are good for digestion. In the summer we can eat more raw foods. But back off from raw if you are getting gassy. :-)
- Avoid heating foods like hot chilies and onions.
So stay cool friends! It's about more than just comfort. Keeping Pitta pacified also supports your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well being as well as building of a strong immune system and overall radiance. Be well and prosper, Rhonda

Featured Tip
I'm Thirsty........
Drink plenty of water each day to cool Pitta. Sweet and astringent fruit juices such as apple, pear, pomegranate, and mango are especially balancing for Pitta. Cranberry juice is also cooling and excellent for urinary health. Warm, not hot, or cool, not iced, mint tea is also pacifying for Pitta. Wine and hard liquor easily aggravate Pitta. Beer, only in moderation of course, is not as taxing.

Recipe of the Month
Poached Pears

with Sweet Orange
& Date Glaze
This dessert is good for pacifying Pitta because of the pears , the coconut, dates, and maple syrup --all cooling in Ayurveda terms.
6 ripe but firm pears
4 pitted dates
juice of one orange
2 tsp maple or date syrup
1 tsp ground cinnamon,, ½ tsp fresh grated ginger, ½ tsp grated orange zest, 2 Tbsp shredded coconut
Peel each pear, leaving stalk and cut thin slice off base so it stands up. Place in sauce pan with inch of water and bring to simmer. Add dates, orange juice, zest, and syrup, and cinnamon, ginger and simmer until pears are tender (about 12 minutes).
Remove pears and place on serving plates. Continue to simmer liquid in pan, stirring all the time until it thickens enough to spoon glaze over pears. Garnish with coconut to serve.
