VUSA Storm State Cup Champions

It was one of the soggiest weekends of the whole year, but that couldn't dampen the excitement, play, and jubilation that the VUSA Storm experienced in December when they defeated the West Seattle Sambas in the Recreation Cup at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila, Wa., to to become the Washington State BU19 Champion soccer team. This was a rematch between the two teams from the state playoffs the weekend before where the Sambas had beaten us in the first game 3-1. The Storm knew their only chance to earn a rematch was to win the rest of their games in order to have a chance to play them again, and they did just that.

In the title match, the Storm struck first in the 12th minute going up 1-0. We struck again in the 44th minute to go into the half leading 2-0. In the second half it was a seesaw battle back and forth with numerous goalkeeper saves on both sides and both teams threatening but never quite able to convert. Finally in the 69th minute, we got our 3rd goal on a bullet from the right corner of the penalty box to the left corner of the goal. We started to breathe a bit easier, but then in the 85th minute the Sambas scored on a corner kick. Not to be outdone, we came back in the 93rd minute, in stoppage time to net our fourth and final goal.

It was an exciting final game for the Storm. This was their 3rd time to make it to state, with two third place finishes the previous two years. This championship marks the end for the Storm as most of the team ages out of club soccer.  What a way to go out, as State Champions!!

Leading the team with 3 goals was Jeff Garbarino. Danny Moreno also had one goal. Truly outstanding play from the rest of the team, from the incredible defense to the sparkling goalkeeping, from the anchoring and controlling midfield to the slashing and dangerous forwards. An awesome team effort by all. Way to go Storm!

Player Spotlight
Ana Delgadillo- Timbers G95 Reds

Ana has been a Timber for the last five years, starting at U11.  She enjoys the competitive part of the game of soccer, the way it continues to flow with not a lot of stoppages like in other sports.  Ana enjoys playing at the highest level, enjoys her team mates and putting in the hard work at practices to get better every day.  Tackling is one of her strengths as a player. She thrives on the contact part of the game and loves the opportunity to win back the ball from opponents.

Her favorite thing about the game is being around her team mates who share the same passion and competitive desire. One of her favorite memories is scoring a header goal on her birthday. Ana enjoys the club atmosphere especially when other players and coaches help with training and show up and cheer at games.

Ana believes that you must have commitment in order to be able to play premier soccer; you must work hard and enjoy practices.  The three things she feels that will help every player to continue to grow in the sport are a positive attitude, commitment and confidence.

Ana Delgadillo is looking forward to playing many more games at the highest level for the Timbers. She does fear (like most players) that injuries could take her away from the game from time to time, but is committed to working hard,
staying healthy and enjoying the game.
