Who Is a Mother?

Ancient Greece recorded the first Mother's Day when they celebrated Rhea, Mother of the Gods.  In the 1600s, England began celebrating "Mothering Sunday"-a time for servants to have a day to visit their mothers.  As Christianity spread, the celebration was dedicated to the "Mother Church."  The tradition spread to the United States where, in 1907, Anna Jarvis began her work to establish a national Mother's Day.

Traditionally, we think of our own Mother when Mother's Day is mentioned, yet there are many other mothers who touch our lives daily.  She is the favorite Aunt who makes time for you, a friend who always has a hug or kind word when you need it, a teacher who spends extra time with your child, the elderly woman who always has cookies in case someone stops by, or the woman whose home is where all the children want to play.  She is the woman who has a smile on her face, although her heart is breaking as she watches her child go to war to keep us safe.

To all the Mothers who have influenced you to be the person that you are, we say "thank you" for a job well done.
