PBID Renewal Petitions Reach Impressive 57.5%

57.5 percent of area property owners have signed petitions approving renewal of the Power Inn Area Property and Business Improvement District (PBID). The 1994 Business Improvement District Law calls for 50 percent plus one of all property owners, by size, to sign petitions putting formation or renewal on the ballot.

These numbers will be put before City Council on May 24, at which time the Council will vote on the "Resolution of Intention" and place the issue on the ballot. Fifty percent of all ballots returned must approve renewal.

The Power Inn PBID was formed with 51 percent of signed petitions in 2006 and will expire at the end of 2011. The renewed PBID will have a 10-year life span to 2022. While the area has been expanded by 44 percent, the per acre assessment rate has been reduced by 10 percent to $181.32. "When was the last time a tax district reduced your taxes?" asked Jerry Vorpahl, Alliance CEO.

Ballots will be sent to all property owners on May 25 and returned by June 12, at which time the City Council will hold a public hearing and rule on the "Resolution of Formation." PBID members are urged to watch for the ballots in the mail and return them promptly.

Two Million Mile Goal for May is Bike Month

"May is Bike Month" and the Alliance is celebrating with hundreds of other cyclists of all levels at the Alliance Fueling Station at the Guy West Bridge on the Parkway each Thursday in May 3:45 - 5:45pm.

Last year, Sacramento region riders logged one million miles and this year the ante is up to accumulate at least two million miles.  Even inexperienced riders can log their miles at www.mayisbikemonth.com for a chance at prizes. Riding to work, the store, even around the neighborhood counts toward the two million mile goal.

Mike Cochran's bicycle broke beyond repair, making his 12-mile commute to work at Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station very difficult. His supervisor contacted The Alliance for help, and now he is one of the six lucky recipients of like-new bikes recycled from the "Go Green-Get Gold" program at Sac State.

Cochran and all member employees who use alternative transportation (bike, walk, transit, car and vanpool) qualify for a ride from work in case of emergency.

Most know The Alliance for the advocacy, clean up and crime efforts, but aren't familiar with the Transportation Management Association (TMA) benefits for all members. Several members, such as Granite Park and Golden 1, have had The Alliance on-site for "Information Stations" allowing employees to ask questions, get resources about commute options and pledge miles for "May is Bike Month."
