Unemployment Rates See Improvement

Unemployment rates for the Capital Area appear to be moving in a more positive direction.  According to the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina (NCESC), Wake County's unemployment rate for January 2011 was 8.0% compared with the same time last year  (January 2010) which was 9.2% and Johnston County's unemployment rate for January 2011 was 9.6% compared with the same time last year which was 10.9%.

Further improvement was seen over the course of 2010 when  the unemployment rate for Wake County fell from 9.2% in January to 7.5% by December and in Johnston County when the unemployment rate fell from 10.9% in January to 8.8% by December (see graph below).

New 'Youth Going Green' Project

'Youth Going Green' is an innovative and creative training to employment program that gives youth aged 17-21 an opportunity to explore green technology while receiving their basic education needs.

In Wake County, Capital Area Workforce Development Board (CAWDB) offers an accelerated GED class through Wake Technical Community College and a high quality Green Technology Weatherization class through NC State. In Johnston County, CAWDB offers the same GED class and Green Technology Weatherization class at Johnston Community College; administered at the Johnston Community Industries Facility.

With additional supportive services, like assisting with day care expenses and providing assistance with transportation, CAWDB tries to take away the barriers preventing youth from achieving their goals.

With growing partnerships in Wake and Johnston County, CAWDB's 'Youth Going Green' project gives youth the opportunity to receive the basic education skills required in today's society and the Green Technology skills to prepare them for tomorrow's workforce.
