 EVENTS

First Thursday Discussion Group-- Meets Tomorrow!
FIRST THURSDAY DISCUSSION GROUP meets the first Thursday of each month at 9:30 am in the Wilson room.  This fall the group is led by Pastor Paul Shupe.  The group will be discussing Falling Upward by Richard Rohr.  Both women and men are invited to attend.  Meeting dates are October 4, November 1 and December 6. " Rohr offers a gentle but firm reminder that although it's appropriate to start the spiritual journey by focusing on security and identity, but there comes a time when we must move beyond the protective fences and engage the world in which we live through the Spirit of God.  Rohr uses the image of life's two halves."  Contact: Lois Smith Martin smithmartin224@verizon.net, 781-270-0304.

October Book Group: The Seasons and Cycles of Spiritual Life--Begins October 2nd in Pearson Room @ 7:15pm

There are seasons of our lives. We don't stay in one constant place. Instead, depending on our life's experiences, our relationship with God changes and evolves. And it's not usually in a linear fashion - there are cycles, where we learn the same lesson in new ways. An opportunity to talk about spiritual practices that help us to learn and grow in whatever season of our spiritual life we may find ourselves in, centered on readings from sections of Naked Spirituality by Brian McLaren - open to women and men. Two copies of the book will be available in the Potter Library. Book is available in paperback 9/25/12. Group led by Becca Lockwood, Seminarian

Prudential Committee Indoor Work Day: Saturday October 13th, 9am-1pm

It's that time again -- the Prudential Committee will hold an INDOOR Work Day on Saturday, October 13, from 9 to 1, to tackle the projects that have piled up over the summer.  We are still gathering the list of projects, so if you have observed anything to be added, please contact Carmen Kalsow (information below).  No specific expertise is needed that day, just a willingness to join in and maybe to try new things (instruction provided).  Please come work with us on Saturday the 13th.  (If your fall is crazy busy already, we will hold another indoor Work Day in November, and an outdoor Work Day later in October -- more information to follow.)  Call or email Carmen Kalsow with questions (<kalsow@rcn.com> or 781-258-9286).
Bagels and Bible: Every Sunday beginning October 14th, 9-9:45am in the Wilson Room

Hancock is starting another Sunday morning discussion group called Bagels and Bible. This discussion-based group is designed for individual adults or families with high school aged children. Childcare is available for younger children. Drop in for a single session, a couple of meetings, or the entire six weeks. Join us in the Wilson Room at 9 m on Sunday mornings starting on October 14th for lively conversation and free bagels.

Our first course will focus on the parables of Jesus. We'll explore the cultural context of first century Judea, trace connections between the Old and New Testaments, and examine the rich symbolism of Jesus' most instructive stories. We will provide the resources to start the conversation but we're most interested in hearing your personal interpretations.

If you would like to learn more about Bagels and Bible, please contact Kerra Fletcher at harold3513@hotmail.com or Jason Troutman at j.e.troutman@hotmail.com.

United States Public Domain

Come join with others who are mourning losses, to explore this question that has perplexed faithful people from the beginning of time. Come to a safe space to quietly look at scripture, art and music, as ways to begin to heal our hearts. Facilitated by Joy Fallon, Congregational Care Coordinator

Wednesdays, October 17, 24, and November 7, 14, morning session  9:30 - 11 AM or evening session 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. This group will be offered twice on Wednesdays, so that it can be accessible to those who prefer daytime gatherings, and those who work during the day. If possible, please plan to come to all four sessions, but drop-ins are also welcome.

 VOLUNTEERING

When in Our Music God is Glorified... Chancel Choir Seeking New Members for Fall 2012!!

The Chancel Choir's "10 by '12" campaign is coming to a close! We have attracted 7 new members so far, but due to very busy travel schedules of many of our members this fall, we need even more! All voice parts are welcome. Haven't sung since high school? No problem! All you need is the desire to sing great music from around the world and across the ages. The choir is a  great place for newcomers to get involved and get to know others in the church (especially at our semi-annual pub nights after rehearsal!) Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the choir room.

For more information, please contact Mark Morgan, Director of Music at 781-862-4220 ext 212 or mark@hancockchurch.org. Or just come on by on Thursday night!

Can You Help Us Make a Difference?  Sock Drive to Benefit the Homeless.
Hancock's Junior Youth Organization (JYO) and Christian Service Committee are working together to collect socks that will be distributed by our friends of Cambridge Outdoor Church and City Mission Society (via their partner, Pilgrim Church in Dorchester).  Please bring in adult men's and women's clean white socks (size medium, large, or extra-large) to donation boxes located outside the church office, the Narthex and at coffee hour on Sunday.  Donations will be collected between now and Nov 4th when the socks will be distributed to needy folks inCambridgeandDorchester.

Sometimes a little thing like clean white socks can make a big difference.  Thank you in advance from JYO and CSC.

 Drivers Wanted

Congregational Care knows of people who would like to come worship on Sunday mornings, but are unable to get here on their own. If you'd be willing to drive occasionally, you'd make a big difference.  Not only will more people get to church;  those of us at church will get to see friends we've been missing!

Call the church office or talk with Joy Fallon if you're interested.

 Progressive Dinner  Progressive Dinner
The Parish Life Committee will again sponsor a Progressive Dinner.  This year, the Progressive Dinner will be held on Saturday January 26th, with a snow date of Saturday February 2nd.  We are looking for people willing to volunteer their homes to host 6, 8, or 10 other church members.  The guests will bring appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, and beverages to add to making the meal a success.  The host chooses the menu and decides what the guests should bring.  All the dinner parties gather together in one home for coffee, tea, and dessert at the end of the evening.  Desserts will be provided by the Parish Life committee.  Anyone who has participated before knows that this is a wonderful evening, and a fun way to meet and socialize .
We need hosts to make it happen! Contact Loretta Porter at 781-862-4408 if you are willing to volunteer your home to host a dinner.
