October Book Group: The Seasons and Cycles of Spiritual Life--Begins October 2nd in Pearson Room @ 7:15pm
There are seasons of our lives. We don't stay in one constant place. Instead, depending on our life's experiences, our relationship with God changes and evolves. And it's not usually in a linear fashion - there are cycles, where we learn the same lesson in new ways. An opportunity to talk about spiritual practices that help us to learn and grow in whatever season of our spiritual life we may find ourselves in, centered on readings from sections of Naked Spirituality by Brian McLaren - open to women and men. Two copies of the book will be available in the Potter Library. Book is available in paperback 9/25/12. Group led by Becca Lockwood, Seminarian For more information contact Daryl Battin - darylbattin@gmail.com or 781-789-3763 |
Hancock Poetry Group: Begins October 10th 7pm in the Wilson Room
Are you a poetry lover? Do you consider poetry an important part of your spiritual life? Or do you simply find that poetry often touches you in a spiritual way? We invite you to get in touch with your spiritual and creative side! The Hancock Poetry Group will meet the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm. The first monthly meeting is 10 October at 7pm in the Wilson Room. We'll be getting to know each other, and everyone is welcome to bring a poem that has touched you. We will read some poetry by Jessie Brown, who will be giving a reading at our November meeting. If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please contact Kerra Fletcher at harold3513@hotmail.com or Amy Kelly at akelly99@gmail.com
Jessie Brown works as a poet-in-residence in schools, libraries, and community centers in the Boston area. Her poems have appeared in various journals, such as The Comstock Review, Peacework, and Soundings East, and translations in The American Poetry Review. She received her Master's degree from the Stanford Writing Program, where she studied with Denise Levertov, and won the American Academy of Poets prize. Her collection Lucky was the 2011 winner for the Anabioisis Press Chapbook Competition. Her second chapbook, What We Don't Know We Know, will be forthcoming from Finishing Line Press in 2013. A founding member of the Alewife Poets, she gives frequent performances and workshops both in collaboration and alone. She lives in Arlington, Massachusetts. |
Prudential Committee Indoor Work Day: Saturday October 13th, 9am-1pm It's that time again -- the Prudential Committee will hold an INDOOR Work Day on Saturday, October 13, from 9 to 1, to tackle the projects that have piled up over the summer. We are still gathering the list of projects, so if you have observed anything to be added, please contact Carmen Kalsow (information below). No specific expertise is needed that day, just a willingness to join in and maybe to try new things (instruction provided). Please come work with us on Saturday the 13th. (If your fall is crazy busy already, we will hold another indoor Work Day in November, and an outdoor Work Day later in October -- more information to follow.) Call or email Carmen Kalsow with questions (<kalsow@rcn.com> or 781-258-9286).

Bagels and Bible: Every Sunday beginning October 14th through May, 9-9:45am in the Wilson Room
Hancock is starting another Sunday morning discussion group called Bagels and Bible. This discussion-based group is designed for individual adults or families with high school aged children. Childcare is available for younger children. Drop in for a single session, a couple of meetings, or the entire six weeks. Join us in the Wilson Room at 9 m on Sunday mornings starting on October 14th for lively conversation and free bagels. Our first course will focus on the parables of Jesus. We'll explore the cultural context of first century Judea, trace connections between the Old and New Testaments, and examine the rich symbolism of Jesus' most instructive stories. We will provide the resources to start the conversation but we're most interested in hearing your personal interpretations. If you would like to learn more about Bagels and Bible, please contact Kerra Fletcher at harold3513@hotmail.com or Jason Troutman at j.e.troutman@hotmail.com. |
First Thursday Discussion Group FIRST THURSDAY DISCUSSION GROUP meets the first Thursday of each month at 9:30 am in the Wilson room. This fall the group is led by Pastor Paul Shupe. The group will be discussing Falling Upward by Richard Rohr. Both women and men are invited to attend. Meeting dates are October 4, November 1 and December 6. " Rohr offers a gentle but firm reminder that although it's appropriate to start the spiritual journey by focusing on security and identity, but there comes a time when we must move beyond the protective fences and engage the world in which we live through the Spirit of God. Rohr uses the image of life's two halves." Contact: Lois Smith Martin smithmartin224@verizon.net, 781-270-0304.

Drivers Wanted
Congregational Care knows of people who would like to come worship on Sunday mornings, but are unable to get here on their own. If you'd be willing to drive occasionally, you'd make a big difference. Not only will more people get to church; those of us at church will get to see friends we've been missing!
Call the church office or talk with Joy Fallon if you're interested.

Progressive Dinner Hosts Needed!
The Parish Life Committee will again sponsor a Progressive Dinner. This year, the Progressive Dinner will be held on Saturday January 26th, with a snow date of Saturday February 2nd. We are looking for people willing to volunteer their homes to host 6, 8, or 10 other church members. The guests will bring appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, and beverages to add to making the meal a success. The host chooses the menu and decides what the guests should bring. All the dinner parties gather together in one home for coffee, tea, and dessert at the end of the evening. Desserts will be provided by the Parish Life committee. Anyone who has participated before knows that this is a wonderful evening, and a fun way to meet and socialize . We need hosts to make it happen! Contact Loretta Porter at 781-862-4408 if you are willing to volunteer your home to host a dinner.
