Remembering Dr.Harry P.McDonald

We are very saddened to hear about the passing of Dr.McDonald. Promise For Haiti has just been recently contacted with news of his death on April 15, 2012. Dr. McDonald was a long time friend and medical missionary to Pignon, Haiti. He was extremely compassionate about treating the community, especially those who absolutely were unable to pay for any form of healthcare.
In other words, he cared for the "poorest of the poor." His donations were always designated to "Funds for Poor."
As we spoke with one of his daughters, she shared the many joys that Dr. McDonald found in Pignon. In this conversation, she surprised us with a gift that her father had left in his Will as a lasting tribute of continual help for the children. This truly speaks volumes of Dr. McDonald's compassion and character.
We are grateful to Dr. McDonald and his family for sharing his love for Pignon and honoring his request of this wonderful gift of generosity and support! His faithful contribution will always be remembered!

Meet Sue Ishee, Our Promise For Haiti Treasurer
 | | Board Members with Sue Ishee (center) |
In an interview setting that was shared with Sue, many informative answers were given. Sue has volunteered as treasurer since 1989. She once lived in Arkansas close to where Dr.Guy had lived. The minister of her church had known about Dr.Guy and his vision to return to Pignon to start a hospital and help his community. Sue's minister then formed a medical mission team including other volunteers who were sent by her church. Not being a medical volunteer herself, Sue helped in many areas but soon learned how to become a dental assistant on that trip as the other assistants became ill. Thus her passion began after visiting Pignon. She has been traveling there since then. Sue's knowledge of accounting and her experience as Business Manager in a clinic opened the door for her. As the former treasurer became ill, Dr.Guy asked Sue if she would become treasurer for Promise For Haiti.
Sue has seen many changes, improvements, and tremendous growth in the mission over twenty plus years. On her first visit to Pignon, she saw that Dr.Guy was there working alone. He relied on visiting mission medical teams for help and any supplies that they could squeeze into their luggage. At that time the hospital was a one story building and poorly equipped. Patients paid very little for services. Through the years and through many efforts of PFH volunteers, the hospital has been expanded and community health services have grown. It has now become one of the better health care systems in Haiti. It is also a training center for health care workers and is a center for Bio-medical training.
Sue also talked about the other services that Promise For Haiti has provided: clean water, sewage treatment, vaccination stations, and education. Schools have been built and are educating the children who will help with the growth of Pignon.
When asked about what direction she would like to see happen for Pignon, she said, " I would like to see an economic base develop further. It would be a great place to locate industry. Pignon is geologically stable, has clean water, good health care, and an educated population base. The crime rate is low and it would be a very safe place to house a university for Haiti".
As our conversation ended, Sue's love for the mission was very evident. She expressed her thoughts by saying, "It is a miracle that the mission has come this far". Sue shares the belief with Dr.Guy that "The Lord will provide". This has been proven time and time again.
