Happy New Year to all of you!
Let me take this time to thank all of you who so generously made a donation this past year. My end of the year appeal to you stated that we were in a very serious financial place. We still have a lot work to do but the generous contributions we received at end of the year enabled us to pay hospital employee salaries for September, October and November. For that we are truly grateful!
We are definitely looking with expectancy to the future, but for the moment, let me mention a few things we are particularly thankful for this past year:
- For the administrative team at the hospital who lead the operations of the mission.
- For the doctors, nurses and support staff at the hospital who serve with grace and love.
- For stateside medical teams who volunteer their time teaching as well as performing surgeries that otherwise may not be available.
- For the teams who introduced a procedure in urology that is going to make life so much better for many Haitian women.
- For the stateside Dental Team and Vision Team and our 3 resident dentists who work so faithfully for the entire community.
- For the newly established bio-med program.
- For the nearly completed Pella Christian School, which will open in the fall of 2012.
- For the progress of the Prosthetics Clinic and program that will be operating in the near future.
- For our scholarship program that has enabled over 1,100 students to attend school this year.
- For the groups who support the feeding program at the hospital and the feeding program in each of our 7 Christian Schools.
- For the work of the stateside Promise for Haiti Board and the Haitian Comite de Bienfaisance Board of Directors for their leadership and vision.
- For the team establishing an exciting and sustainable Health Development Account for Haitian families to pay for their own healthcare and provide revenue for the hospital.
- For all the missionaries/volunteers who gave of their time, money and talents to serve the beautiful people of Haiti
- For all of our Partner Organizations, groups, churches and individuals who faithfully support and pray for this mission.
I know there are many things that I have omitted - just know that we are so thankful and appreciative to all of you!
If I had a magic wand and one wish, I would wish for enough donations every month to cover the expenses at the hospital. (approximately $30,000 a month) Right now that is not our reality but there is a new program that we are initiating in January of this year. The new Health Development Account (HDA) will give us more sustainable funding and allow Haitian families to pay for their own health care while also providing economic incentives. You will be hearing more about this in the near future. We are also ready to launch a new web site within the next few weeks. The address is www.promiseforhaiti.org. The new website allows more frequent updates, information for mission teams, stories and news, as well as the use of social media like facebook, twitter, youtube, the pfh blog, and much more. Check it out!
In closing, please remember to pray for the mission daily and that we live out the mission statement that guides us. With the Lord's help and blessing and with the help of all of you, 2012 will be a fantastic year. I am excited and look forward with great anticipation for what is going to happen as we serve and work together in the name of Jesus Christ.
Blessings,
Denny Brand

UMCOR (UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE ON RELIEF) GRANT HAS BEEN AWARDED TO PROMISE FOR HAITI, INC!We owe a special thanks to Dr. Marvin Loyd for bringing a team of UMCOR members to our mission in Pignon in order to see the needs of the hospital and throughout the community!
Promise For Haiti, Inc. is very pleased that it has received a grant for this year from UMCOR. The United Methodist Committee on Relief of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church has approved a release of $60,000 to be disbursed in two installments. This is to support Promise For Haiti/Hopital Bienfaisance de Pignon in providing continued healthcare, education and clean water to the community of Pignon, Haiti.
This money will specifically be used to buy medicines, cholera supplies, medical supplies and for paying part of the salaries of the doctors and nurses. This will provide assistance at such a crucial time. Due to repercussions from the Earthquake in 2010, the needs for health care in the Pignon region have risen and continue to increase.Last year, Promise for Haiti, Inc. also received a $10,000 grant from UMCOR to help with medicines and hiring healthcare workers to educate the community against HIV/AIDS treatment and preventionas they traveled to remote areas.

A SUCCESS STORY As a result from this aid a mother of four children tested positive for HIV/AIDS. She lives in a place called Djandjoukou in a communal section of Pignon. She followed the advice of a health care worker who had been recruited in the UMCOR program. He encouraged her to get tested in order to know her status and follow treatment. At one point, she became bed ridden with fear of death looming if she did not seek care and medications. Following the advice of the UMCOR health agent at the Voluntary Counseling and Testing Service of Pignon Hospital, she met certain criteria and was placed under ART. After one month, her condition improved and she was able to resume all her activities and work as her spouse's work was non productive due to drought.Today, this lady is doing community outreach and encouraging others to come to the hospital for testing and treatment!

Houston Haiti Relief Initiative Team and Rotary International Make a Difference in Haiti!

Evenel Osias, Hospital de Bienfaisance manager, tells about the great things that are happening in Haiti by means of scheduled meetings. As written in his own words, Evenel says, "Missionary Hospital Bienfaisance in Pignon /Haiti
Teaching to other Hospitals scattered all over Haiti to keep updated their Hospitals Equipments.
Training of Biomedical Technicians for Repair of Equipments for Hospitals all over Haiti.
Hopital Bienfaisance in Pignon training technicians of Hospitals in Haiti from North to South and East to West.
One of the weakness of Hospitals in Haiti is to find Repair persons to keep their medical equipments working when needed.
In the past, sporadically, some helpers could show up from the States for a week to do some repairs.
Most of the time, the time is too short to finish the work and the Trainees rarely have the time to absorb the teachings.
This time, a sustainable continuous training for 3 consecutive years , with a rotation of 2 weeks every 2 months for 3 consecutive years.
This program is being initiated and given at the Hospital Bienfaisance in Pignon with the support of HHRI & Rotary International.

Vicki Brentin, a member of the HHRI Team wrote this account of their trip to Pignon! "Sunny Sharma, Past District Governor Rotary 5890, bio medical engineer and owner of a Houston medical equipment supply and repair company, always hada vision to develop a medical equipment training program that would benefit developing world nations. Rotary Club Past President and retired Methodist minister, John Collier has a long history of supporting international service projects through Rotary and his work as President of Caring Friends. He made his first trip to Haiti in the Fall of 2009 with a water and sanitation NGO. Rotary Club Past President and retired lawyer, Vicki Brentin, spent many years working for a large international humanitarian organization and also leading Rotary world community service projects. She made her first and what she expected to be her only trip to Haiti as part of a Rotary team on January 12, 2010 - arriving 45 minutes before the earthquake. Together they have led efforts to develop and launch Haiti's first formal classroom training program to teach bio-medical equipment repair."
