Olivet Baptist Church Mission Provides Great Support! Bob Vaughn led a team to Pignon on November 10. In his words, he describes their work.

"This year a 12 member Olivet Baptist Church Mission Team traveled to Pignon, Haiti November 10-17, 2011. We had 6 first time to Haiti people and it was a great experience for all. Our primary work project was building 40 school desks and delivering them to a school at the poor rural village of Santiak. It was a great thrill to watch the school kids interact and help with the final assembly of the desks. They loved the power drill--that was a new experience for them. Our other work project was finishing the tile floor on the rooms below the hospital dorm. With much hard work from our guys and the help of Haitian labor we finished the entire area including the stairway to the dorm. Last--but not least--we did several teaching, reading, singing and activity projects at the library. It would be wonderful if each mission team visiting Pignon would plan some library sessions throughout the week. As you know most of the kids do not have their own textbooks at school and the library is a whole new concept for them. However, as they get acquainted with the library resources, it is our prayer this might be a learning tool that will have a positive impact on their lives and the lives of the next generation. The week in Pignon and surrounding areas was a great experience for our first time to Haiti friends and an equally great experience for those who had been there many times. We are so glad God allowed us to spend this time with His people in Haiti. Our conclusion--as a result of this trip some area of our life will be changed forever." New desks make learning easier!

Evenel Osias, who is from Pignon and is the manager of the Hospital de Bienfaisance, gives this summary of their visit. In his own words he writes:
"The Hopital Bienfaisance de Pignon, once more, is removing women with continuous, permanent Leak of Urine from complication of Prolonged and Delayed Birth Delivery from Social exclusion. Women with Vesico-Vaginal Fistula, or traumatic communication between the Bladder and the Vagina , as Complication of Pregnancy where there is no Doctors available to do Cesarian Section on Time are being treated in the Hospital in Pignon /Haiti. Vesico-Vaginal Fistula, removes women with this complication from Society,so mucn that they permanently smell by the Urine that they can not control and which soils them continuously. They are rejected by Society and their husband and go into hiding as Outcast. Repairing those fistula, give a chance to those women to reintegrate society and regain their family life. 7 Women were treated in the Hospital in Pignon, with young doctors coming from University hospital from Port-au-Prince to learn the new techniques of Surgery. They were elated to return to Life and to Society. They did not and could not pay a Penny. Please support financially and prayerfully this Hospital to continue this salvation work."

Dr. Henri Lanctin, a urologist from Sartell, MN, organized and led the team to Pignon from November 14-18.
Below is a summary of their visit. To read further details about their procedures and visit from Dr.Lanctin, please click here. Project Haiti Report Dr. Henri Lanctin led a surgical team from IVU Med and Project Haiti to Pignon in November. Together they performed a very serious surgical procedure called vesico-vaginal fistula. Dr. Lanctin stated, "The repair of VVF is challenging, although the surgical principles have been well established. These life-changing procedures can be performed in specialized hospitals in many developing countries. Prior to this course in Pignon, no formal training course has been conducted in Haiti. The team, led by urologist Dr. Henri Lanctin from Sartell, MN, consisted of Dr. Joe Costa from Jacksonville, FL and Dr. Joe Babiarz from Wausau, WI, two accomplished female pelvic floor reconstructive urologists. Also accompanying the team was Dr. Samantha Pace, a gynecology resident from the University of Chicago, and 2 nurse anesthetists, Tatjana Provost and Laura Springhetti from Salt Lake City, UT. The weeks' events were recorded by photojournalist, Kohl Threlkeld, for production of a documentary. This is seen as a critical step in helping to determine the exact number of these patients in Haiti. As word spreads throughout Haiti that there is help for this condition, awareness will increase and more patients will come forward"
Thanks to Dr. Paul Severson, who is founder and president of Project Haiti, for helping to coordinate this work. Dr. Severson has taught over 20 years in Pignon. Working with Dr. Batsch, medical director of Hopital de Bienfaisance, other Haitian doctors, residents, and nurses, encouraged a bond to be formed among team members. Future plans are being made for a return trip to Pignon in March and May of 2012 to conduct further surgical studies and procedures.
