Issue #9 | March 2012

LinkedIn Embryo Donation Network

The Embryo Donation Network We are excited about the LinkedIn group we've created for professionals dedicated to encouraging embryo donation to build families and who want to share knowledge, research and resources about this important subject.

Some other guiding principles of this group include:

  • The Embryo Donation Network is dedicated to the idea that cryopreserved embryos should be donated rather than abandoned or discarded and encourages embryo donation to build families.
  • We also believe that embryo donation services, sometimes termed "embryo adoption," should be provided regardless of race, religion, ancestry, sexual preference or marital status.
  • While the term "embryo adoption" is frequently used, the term adoption generally applies to a living human being. The term "embryo adoption" could be misconstrued as encouraging personhood of the embryo, which could have vast medical, political, legal and ethical ramifications. For these reasons, the term "embryo donation" is preferred.
  • Members may include reproductive endocrinologists, embryologists, IVF coordinators, practice administrators, medical support staff, laboratory support staff, third-party brokers, cryopreservation center personnel, reproductive attorneys, legal support staff, mental health professionals, medical ethicists and other individuals interested in embryo donation.

We welcome you to join us! In order to become a member of the group, you will need to register with LinkedIn, search for the Embryo Donation Network group and then request membership, which will almost certainly be granted quickly.

Winner of the Survey Prize!
At the beginning of this year, we sent a survey asking our readers what they wanted to see in a newsletter. To encourage their completion of the survey, we offered a $50 gift card or the same amount towards one of the charities to which we donate when patients donate embryos. Erin and Tom, embryo donors, participated in the survey and won the prize and donated $50 to The American Fertility Association.

We want to thank everyone for participating. Rest assured we considered carefully many of your comments and recommendations. Aware of the limited time you have in your busy lives, this was one of the reasons we moved to a quarterly format. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions!

Featured Embryo Recipient
We've recently started highlighting the stories of hopeful embryo recipients on our website. We hope patients who are contemplating the next steps for their cryopreserved embryos will read some of these stories and understand that patients seeking donated embryos are very much like themselves. We believe that by promoting these stories, we will encourage potential embryo donors to donate.

recipient storiesWe'd like to share an example of one featured potential embryo recipient story.

"I am an educator, and though my job now involves teaching teachers, I have loved helping my many "children" from my classroom days grow and reach for the stars. Pursuing a career in education is just one of the steps I've taken along my life journey, which has centered on children ever since my earliest babysitting days.

I didn't meet the man I wanted to marry until I was in my mid 30s. Though we had discussed children prior to marriage, my husband became hesitant afterwards and wavered in his desire to be a father, which delayed our attempts to become pregnant. We ultimately began trying in earnest to conceive a child. Month after month with no success finally prompted us to seek the support of a fertility specialist recommended by my OB/GYN..."

The narratives also include the recipient's country and general region and the type of embryo donation procedure to which they agree.

Please be sure to forward these links to any potential embryo donors so they will better understand the lives of those of potential recipients - men and women with infertility histories that differ little from their own experiences.

Research Survey Initiated

researchIn participation with our parent organization, Specialists In Reproductive Medicine & Surgery, P.A., (SRMS), we sent an embryo cryopreservation survey to nearly 100 patients who have cryopreserved embryos stored at SRMS. If you received the survey, please be sure to complete and return it as soon as possible. Remember, if it is returned by Monday, March 26, 2012, we will donate $20 per survey returned to the charity of your choice.

We hope to present and publish the information in the months ahead, so stay tuned!

Upcoming Presentations

EDI is involved in many exciting activities. Over the next few months, we'll be discussing various topics related to embryo donation at the following meetings:  presentation

  • American Bar Association Meeting, April, Miami Beach, Florida
  • Fifth Paul G. McDonough Lectureship and Symposium at the Georgia Health Sciences University (formally the Medical College of Georgia), May, Augusta, Georgia
  • The American Psychological Association Meeting, May, Fort Myers, Florida

If you are attending any of these events, be sure to say "hello." We look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you for reading Embryo Donation Times by Embryo Donation International (EDI).

Our vision is simple...
  • To increase the number of cryopreserved embryos donated while reducing the number of frozen embryos discarded or abandoned.
  • To assist in matching donated embryos to patients in need in an ethical, fair and nondiscriminatory fashion.
  • To provide the largest selection of donated embryos we can so embryo recipients can have the best choice possible.

As a subdivision of Specialists In Reproductive Medicine & Surgery, P. A., we have been performing embryo donation since 2001 making us one of the most experienced embryo donation facilities in the U.S.A. We welcome you to EDI and wish you success in all that you do.
