Out Damned Scot! It's Burns Night!
| | Exit Zero's Jack Wright |
Get out your clan tartan, and your kilt and party like a Scotsman! Come celebrate one of the world's finest poets and get your Haggis on!! The birth of Rabbie Burns is feted every year in Scotland and all over the world and the annual birthday extravaganza in Cape May is being held, as always, in the British pub-style atmosphere of the Ugly Mug on Washington Street.
The men of the Cape Atlantic Irish Pipe Brigade will entertain the audience with a selection of Scottish bagpipe classics throughout the night. Tickets include a three-course Scottish meal and a cash bar. Choose from beef or vegetarian haggis, and classic fish-and-chips. Master of Ceremonies, Exit Zero's Jack Wright, will keep the party rocking as you enjoy food, drink, songs, poetry, and even bagpipes in celebration of Scotland's own Robert Burns. Just keep your hands off my sporran! All proceeds benefit Cape May Stage. Tickets: $30 To reserve a ticket, call Exit Zero at (609) 770-8479 or email info@exitzero.us. __________________________________________________________________________ |

A Winter Warmer
with the Persnickity Chef
Chef Jon Davies shares his recipe for Potato Leek Soup. From CapeMay.com article "Winter Refuge in the Kitchen".
| |
Potato Leek Soup with The Persnickety Chef
|
Basic Potato Soup
- 1 onion diced
- 1 leek diced
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 Yukon gold potatoes diced
- 8 cups chicken stock
- 1 tbsp fresh thyme
- Salt and pepper
- 1 cup cream
- 4 tbsp flour
In soup pot, melt butter. Sweat onions and leeks until tender. Add thyme. Sweat 2-3 minutes more. Mix in flour. Slowly incorporate stock. Season with salt and pepper. Add potatoes. Cook until tender. Finish with cream.
Variations: - Add cheddar cheese, bacon and rosemary for a heartier chowder style soup
- Omit cream and add cooked sausage, broccoli rabe and parmesan for an Italian flair
- Puree and garnish with chives and sour cream for an elegant touch
Remember the mantra: The ingredients my change, but the technique remains the same.

Tis the Season to Shop Local
by Elisa Lala, Press of AC
West Cape May resident Janet Payne thinks she knows the secret to getting Cape May County though this bad economy. "Two words, shop local," Payne said. Payne is a professional artist in Cape May County who works in a variety of media, from handcrafted, wearable jewelry made from beach glass and precious metal clay, to sea glass mosaics and linoleum art press wall decor. Payne's art, along with the art of more than a dozen county artisans, can be purchased at Splash, a gallery on Carpenter Lane in Cape May. "When you buy from Splash, the money goes directly back to Cape May County," she said.
Hilary Pritchard, who owns Splash along with her husband, Chuck, said in another life, she was a professional artist. In this life, she is a small-business owner, but with an artist's eye, she said. Hilary and Chuck own two businesses in Cape May, a Whale's Tale, which Hilary describes as an "electric emporium," and Splash, a fine arts and craft gallery selling handmade jewelry, pottery and wall decor. The Pritchards opened Whale's Tale in 1974, selling toys, candles, souvenirs and other small trinkets. They opened Splash last year.
