Touching Haiti with the love of Christ

Welcome to Haitian Christian Mission

Greetings!

These are truly exciting times for Haitian Christian Mission.  Amazing things are in the works for HCM and we want to make sure all our supporters know what is going on.  Interest in visiting and supporting the work of HCM has exploded since the earthquake in January of this year.  While that event was very tragic and took the lives of some of our very own people, God is using that event to turn eyes toward Haiti.  With everyone's continued and increased support, we at Haitian Christian Mission are ready to do many things to improve the lives of those in Haiti.

A note from Sara Dessieux, Editor:
In the past, many of you have enjoyed the communication and
information contained in the Haitian Christian Mission newsletter
"Mission Lines".  The costs of printing and mailing, however, have risen
making this expense an extravagant use of mission funds if done very
frequently. The new "e-Mission Lines" enables us to share the
successes and needs of Haitian Christian Mission with our friends in a
very timely and cost-efficient manner.  News can be formatted and
delivered in a matter of days instead of weeks.  In addition, you can
easily share the good news of Haitian Christian Mission with friends
and churches by simply clicking on the forward button in the
       newsletter.

To further help us out, please take a moment to update your profile by
clicking on the link below this newsletter.

For those without email, we will print and mail copies to ensure
that no one is left out of the information loop.  Thank you and may God
bless you for your prayers and support of Haitian Christian Mission as we
work to evangelize and comfort the people of Haiti.
Fond Parisien: Our Present and Future Haiti map
For many years HCM was centralized in Port-au-Prince.  During the past few years the expansion emphasis has been shifted to Fond Parisien, a town 45 minutes east of the capital on the main road to the Dominican Republic.  When the earthquake hit, we became even more thankful that we had begun the shift out of Port-au-Prince.  These days our mission compound in Fond Parisien is being visited by many teams every month.

Currently HCM has a school that serves children from kindergarten through high school, church, clinic, OB/GYN hospital complete with a fully functioning operating room, woodworking shop, nine-bedroom guest house, and our very own tent city.  We hope to do away with that last item as we build houses for the displaced families.  In Pastor Prophete's most recent letter he explains all the building that we hope to do in the coming years.

We know it will continue to be a thrilling ride and we do not want you to miss out on it!

Mission Teams
During the months of May and June, one hundred and forty-eight people came through the mission guesthouse in Fond Parisien.  These people came with evangelistic, medical, and construction teams.  They hosted Vacation Bible Schools at various HCM schools, conducted a revival in Fond Parisien, held a women's two-day Bible study, provided continuing education for preachers in the area, and gave medical care to over 2,200 patients in mobile clinics alone.  Surgical teams preformed more than forty-five surgeries at HCM's Christ for All Clinic.  Construction teams helped to finish office space and new bedrooms at the guesthouse and assisted with the groundbreaking of three new homes.  These teams also helped by providing jobs for HCM staff including interpreters, cooks, and drivers.

American nurse and patientMany teams also donated generously to The Nehemiah Project and helped to provide new equipment for offices and soccer teams as well as medical supplies.  We praise God for all the faithful people He has sent to HCM!
NahomieWho is living in that tent?
Nahomie has faithfully attended the HCM church in Port-au-Prince with her family her whole life.  The day of the quake they lost not only their home but also their church building and the school where her mother had been a teacher for years.  Nahomie's family moved out to the compound in Fond Parisien where she and her parents are now living in a 20x20 tent.  Nahomie works as an interpreter while her parents hope for better days when the school will be rebuilt allowing her mother to return to work.  Her family now consistently attends the church in Fond Parisien.  Nahomie's family shares food with the community of refugees and gets water from outdoor faucets for washing and bathing.  These people are a living example of how the early church in Acts functioned.  They live and worship together, sharing what they have with others in need.
From Edwens PropheteEdwens Prophete
Greetings from Haiti!  I would like to take a moment to thank all of the teams who have come and poured out their gifts and talents this summer for HCM.  My first two months in Haiti assisting my father have been busier than I could have imagined.  We have seen the completion of the woodshop that is now producing doors, windows, roofing and more as we rebuild.  The purchase of land has led to the groundbreaking for new homes.  Thanks to the Lord for our partners at IDES.

My mother, Betty, continues to keep us all focused on the main mission which is testifying to the love of Christ.  She has been tireless in her efforts to keep things running smoothly and in attending to all the needs of those at the mission.  My dad amazes me with his wisdom and leadership.  We continue to covet your prayers and financial support.
Dr. PatrickSpotlight on Our Medical Staff

Have you met Dr. Emmanuel and Dr. Patrick?  If you haven't, you have missed a tremendous blessing.  These two men work tirelessly to keep our clinic up and running 24/7.  Dr. Patrick lost his home in the quake.  He travels back and forth between Port-au-Prince and Fond Parisien.  He gives up his bed many nights to allow our visiting doctors and nurses to be more comfortable.  Dr. Emmanuel also lost his home and travels back and forth as he continues his education and gives his best to care for the patients in Fond Parisien and in the surrounding areas.  Both of these men also travel with our mobile clinics giving compassionate care to the people they encounter.

This past May Dr. Patrick cared for and diagnosed a Jamaican man visiting a nearby mission who had come down with typhoid.  Late into the night a visiting team was right there administering aid and working in cooperation with Dr. Patrick.  Their quick response and Dr. Patrick's diagnosis saved the man's life.

Dr. EmmanuelA few days later while revival was wrapping up in the church next door, an older gentleman who had been to the clinic just days before came into the clinic.  He was in his final hours of battling throat cancer.  A team from Generations Christian Church had arrived only hours before and their doctors gave pain meds to the patient and emotional support to the family as he died.  What a way to start a trip!  Dr. Emmanuel quietly extended a hand of compassion to the new team and then took care of the details of transporting the body.

When asked to describe Dr. Emmanuel, the words gentle and compassionate come quickly to mind.

HCM is blessed with so many wonderful staff members and we just wanted you to get to know these men.  Please take time to lift these men and their families up in prayer as they face these hardships every day.

Girls soccer teamPlay It Forward!
A new soccer league has kicked off in Fond Parisien!  Thanks to Alison Gaddis and her supporters, Play It Forward (PIF) hosted its first tournament in June.  Forty boys participated in the four-day event.  Complete with music, fans, and new uniforms and goals, the event brought in people from all around the community.  In July, PIF organized two new teams for girls.  To learn more about this exciting new program, visit http://thenehemiahprojecthaiti.com

So Many Surgeries

So Many Surgeries
Surgery
HCM's hospital, originally designed to be an obstetrics center, has been a huge blessing for many Haitians. In the wake of the earthquake, a visiting medical team set up the operating room which up to that point had not been used but was full of equipment.  Before that team left Haiti, surgeons were coming in to perform operations.  Since that time several different surgery teams have performed numerous operations.  The building also contains a consultation room, an instrument sterilization room, a storage room and a large patient recovery room.  There is also a delivery room where two Haitian midwives are always busy delivering babies.  God's plan for that building far surpassed our plan for it.  Now lives are being improved and saved thanks to generous donations of money and time.  Surgeons, physicians and other medical personnel interested in serving at the HCM clinic and hospital can click here to request more information.

New Videos

We have created a series of four videos directed at children that talk about life in Haiti.  These can be used for VBS or children's church.  We also have a 4-minute video that tells about the Nehemiah Project.  You can request copies of these by calling or emailing the HCM office and we will be happy to get them out to you!
