PRESS RELEASE:
Sunday October 14th is the last Philmont Farmers' Market of the season.
The market will host a special raffle of vendor items, including a large beautiful wooden bowl estimated at a $45.00 value donated by Tom Kenny of Hand Made Wooden Bowls. Raffle tickets are $2 with 100% of the proceeds going towards supporting the market's educational programming. This season the market sponsored a number of "Families Growing Together" workshops run by the Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Food Stamp EBT program, the New York Fresh Connect Check program, and a free vegetable market coupon program for shoppers using SNAP food stamps.
A wood turning demonstration will be given by Tom Kenny conducting bowl turnings every half hour from 10am to 1pm. The demonstration is dependent on no rain next Sunday.
Vendors will be celebrating a record breaking season which opened on June 3rd. The Philmont Farmers' Market has seen significant increases in Sunday shopper patronage, including a 75% increase of low-income shoppers using SNAP food stamps, senior nutrition vouchers, WIC vouchers, and New York Fresh Connect Checks. The market has an on-site EBT station. Only three farmers' markets in Columbia County provide this service.
Market Manager, Sebastian McCabe, a previous student from Taconic Hills High School who organized the market back in 2009 stated, "It's been a heartening season to see this small market has become the Sunday gathering place in the Village and has gained so much support over the last four years. We started out very small with only two vendors. We now have 12 regular local vendors and can finally say this market has become a permanent fixture to a Sunday morning in the village." "It's another small success gain for the Philmont community."
The market is held on the parking lot at 93 Main St at the Albert Tripp Senior Nutritional Center.
