MCAA MOURNS THE PASSING OF ALAN O'SHEA It is with great sadness that MCAA learned of the untimely passing of MCA of New Jersey Executive Director Alan O'Shea on September 28. John Gentille, Executive Vice President and CEO of MCAA, said of O'Shea, "Alan was actively engaged in and highly supportive of the activities of his national association, where his knowledge of the legislative process greatly assisted the advocacy efforts of MCAA's Government Affairs Committee, of which he was a long-standing member. As a member of MCAA's Industry Improvement Funds Committee and former chair of MCAA's Association Executives Council, Alan regularly drew upon his expertise as a veteran and experienced state-wide trade association executive to further the development of key programs for the benefit of his counterparts throughout the United States. It would be difficult to overstate the extent to which Alan was regarded and respected by his association and industry colleagues and friends nationwide. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all." In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Common Ground Grief Center, 67 Taylor Avenue, Manasquan, NJ 08736. |

About 200 attendees-members of MCAA's student chapters, their faculty advisors, local association executives and staff and interested contractors-came to Kansas City, MO this week for a conference dedicated to the future professionals of our industry. Hosted by the MCA of Kansas City, the conference focused on techniques and tools to help young industry hopefuls run successful projects and operations. MCAA President Mac Lynch opened the Summit with welcome remarks and encouraging words about the career opportunities available to well-educated and talented young people who are interested in gaining full-time employment or student internships with the mechanical contracting, mechanical service and plumbing industry. Bill Alexander of Alexander Mechanical, Inc. (Kansas City, MO) and Vice President of the MCA of Kansas City also welcomed attendees and invited students to consider the employment possibilities offered by our industry. Following presentations on the 2012-2013 MCAA Student Chapter Competition-construction of NASA's Space Exploration Center Building in Cape Canaveral, FL-and on the MCA of Indiana Student Chapter at Purdue University, Robert Beck of John W. Danforth Company (Tonawanda, NY) led a session on scheduling. MSCA Board of Managers Chairman Woody Woodall of W.L. Gary Company (Washington, DC) delivered a presentation on MSCA's GreenSTAR program. Woodall and Troy Aichele of Stirrett-Johnsen, Inc. (Silverdale, WA) teamed up for a session about how to make the most of first time meetings with professionals. Another session, led by Kathy McCauley of McCauley Mechanical Construction, Inc. (Bridgeview, IL) and Ann Mattheis of MCAA, gave students tips on project bid proposal development, and a panel of recent graduates offered advice on transitioning from college to career. The featured tour was of the Kauffman Performing Arts Center (thanks to U.S. Engineering of Kansas City, MO for helping with the tour arrangements). Attendees enjoyed dinner and a tour of the Liberty Memorial World War I Museum. Our thanks to MMC Contractors, Inc.
