MCAA National Update for September 10, 2012
"SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE" BRINGS RESULTS
The MCA of Chicago's "September Challenge" to its local affiliate peers and to MCAA members is bearing fruit.  The challenge is that the MCA of Chicago (MCAC) will match dollar for dollar the first $25,000 in contributions and pledges made to the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF)by local MCAs and MCAA members during the month of September.  This past week, the MCA of Utah and the MCA of Eastern PA and West Chester Mechanical (West Chester, PA) each stepped up to the challenge, and their contributions to MCERF were doubled as the MCA of Chicago matched their contributions!  An added bonus?  Each contributor earmarked 50% of their donation to the new MCERF Scholarship Fund and the MCAC has done the same.  Therefore, their contributions support both the new MCERF Scholarship Fund and its other education and research activities such as internships, faculty education and industry research.  To find out more about the "September Challenge," contact Dennis Langley (dlangley@mcaa.org).

MANAGEMENT METHODS COMMITTEE RELEASES NEW BULLETINS

MCAA's Management Methods Committee is releasing two new Management Methods Bulletins that showcase recent winners of the E. Robert Kent Award for Management Innovation. Serviceeye (MI 3), developed by H.T. Lyons, Inc. (Allentown, PA) is a custom-designed service software system that provides detailed work and billing history for each piece of equipment covered by H.T. Lyons, eases access to documents, simplifies the payroll process, provides an affordable solution to remote monitoring, reduces unbillable labor costs and more. Service technicians access Serviceeye using a mobile device. The Articulating Weld Boom (MI 4), developed by Shinn Mechanical, Inc. (Kent, WA), is a device that was designed for the most efficient use of space and safety. The device allows fabricators to perform any type of welding, including TIG, without any cords or hoses on the floor and the working end is equipped with a vent hood to expel welding gases. These publications are free to MCAA/MSCA members as a benefit of membership. Access them at http://www.mcaa.org/private/mgmtmeth/.

7TH EDITION OF SAFETY MANUAL IS COMING YOUR WAY
A new version of MCAA's extremely popular Safety Manual for the Mechanical Construction Tradeswill be available in mid-September. MCAA has made substantive changes to the manual due to recent changes in industry best practices and occupational safety and health regulations. The manual is a user-friendly, color illustrated pocket size publication designed specifically for mechanical construction workers. It covers 50 different industry-specific topics from emergency response (CPR/First Aid) to welding and cutting safety. MCAA contractor members and local affiliates will receive a free copy of this publication as a benefit of MCAA membership in the September membership mailing. For more information, contact Pete Chaney (pchaney@mcaa.org).
HAVE YOU SIGNED UP YOUR MOST EXPERIENCED PROJECT MANAGERS FOR AIPM?
If not, spaces are almost gone. The Advanced Institute for Project Management (AIPM is designed to build on the knowledge and skills that your best project managers have acquired from their many years of successfully managing projects. Taught by our industry's top experts, AIPM Class 9 curriculum includes team building, keeping customers for life, legal issues, staying on top of schedules and productivity impacts, avoiding litigation, operational management, insurance and bonding, goal setting, and much more. MCAA recommends that you send only graduates of the Institute for Project Management (IPM) with some project management experience or advanced project managers with considerable experience. LEARN HOW TO INCREASE DATA CENTERS' ENERGY EFFICENCY

Is your company chasing projects that involve the construction of high performance data centers? Then, consider signing up for MCAA's next Green Building Webinar, Building High Performance Data Centers, on September 27 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. Data centers represent a large amount of mechanical work for contractors as they require significant cooling loads for operation. This seminar, led by Matt Gregg, PE, LEED AP of the McKinstry Company (Seattle, WA) will talk about methods for increasing efficiency within these facilities and using the upcoming LEED rating system for data centers. There is no fee; participation is a benefit of MCAA membership. Register at https://mcaa.webex.com.
