| MCAA National Update for July 30, 2012 |
MCAA RELEASES REVISED MODEL HAZARD COMMUNICATION PROGRAM
MCAA's newly updated Model Hazard Communication Program is now available for download at www.mcaa.org/store. MCAA made the changes to simplify contractors' compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) updated standard on hazard communication. Under the revised standard, contractors must comply with a new Globally Harmonized System for hazard communication which replaced traditional chemical hazard classification and identification practices. MCAA made the changes and released the program now to give contractors time to learn about the new program and implement its requirements before the December 1, 2013 deadline. "The revised Model Hazard Communication Program was designed specifically for mechanical industry contractors," notes Tom Skaggs, chairman of MCAA's Safety and Health Committee and Vice President - Safety for the Murphy Company (St. Louis, MO). The publication is available at no charge to MCAA/MSCA members as a benefit of membership. Contact Pete Chaney (pchaney@mcaa.org) for more information. |

LEARN HOW YOUR ROLE CHANGES WITH DIFFERENT LEED RATING SYSTEMS
MCAA's next Green Building Webinar (August 16, 2012, 1:00 p.m. Eastern time) focuses on the various LEED rating systems and how their differences affect your role on a project. The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) has created a variety of green building rating systems that reflect and accommodate specific or unique building types or occupant end-uses. Although the basic LEED requirements and categories vary little across different rating systems, the actual credit requirements and associated LEED submittal documentation changes for each building type and the applied LEED certification system. If your company has projects that involve one or more of the LEED rating systems-LEED-Schools, LEED-Core & Shell, LEED-Interior Design & Construction, LEED-Retail or LEED-Healthcare-register for this program. Courtney France, LEED AP of France Sustainable Solutions, will lead the seminar. The webinar is free to MCAA/MSCA members as a benefit of membership; register at https://mcaa.webex.com/. |

DEPARTMENT OF LABOR CELEBRATES APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM BENEFITS
MCAA Past President Lonnie Coleman, a member of the Labor Department's Apprenticeship Advisory Committee, recently participated in the Department's 75th Anniversary of the National Apprenticeship Act in Washington D.C., Out Educate, Out Build, Out Innovate. At the event, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis lauded the United Association's registered apprenticeship program as a leader among the National Act's Trailblazers, and she commended the UA for being the first national program registered under the Act and for "giving the nation a model to follow." At the event, the DoL Employment and Training Administration also released a new research study, An Effectiveness Assessment and Cost-Benefit Analysis of Registered Apprenticeship in 10 States, performed by Mathematica Policy Associates. One of the principal findings of the report was that individuals who participate in registered apprenticeship programs have significantly higher earnings over the course of a standard career than those who do not participate. Individuals who complete a standard registered apprenticeship program can expect career net gains of $233,828 over those who do not complete a program, and the social benefits to jurisdictions that offer the registered apprenticeship program outweigh the costs of administration. States included in the study are: FL, GA, IA, KY, MD, MO, NJ, OH, PA, TX. |
NORCAL MCA CONTRIBUTES TO MCERF...AGAIN...WITH A TWIST!
The Northern California Mechanical Contractors Association (NORCAL) recently donated $10,000 to the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF), raising its total contribution to $326,000. This time, however, the association requested that half its contribution go to the new MCERF Scholarship Program, making NORCAL the first local affiliate to earmark part of its contribution to the MCERF Scholarship Program. The MCERF Board of Trustees acknowledges and appreciates NORCAL's ongoing support of its education and research activities, especially for its new scholarship initiative. Find out more about the Foundation and its programs at www.mcerf.org or contact Dennis Langley (dlangley@mcaa.org). |
