MCERF ANNOUNCES "MCERF SCHOLARSHIPS"

MCERF LogoAt its June 25 Board of Trustees meeting, the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF) approved a unique scholarship program.  As a part of its "push for excellence," MCERF has added scholarships to its existing annual Chapters of Excellence awards; these awards are earned by student chapters that excel on a list of objective criteria set and scored by MCAA's Career Development Committee.  MCERF President Robert T. Armistead of Armistead Mechanical, Inc., Waldwick, N.J. said, "As an industry, we must expect and recognize excellence.  We have to be smarter and more motivated to do a great job than the other guys...we cannot instill this attitude and these expectations too early.  Working through our successful network of student chapters makes sense and ties it all together."  Chapter of Excellence awardees will receive $7,500, of which $5,000 goes to scholarships for worthy chapter members, and $2,500 goes to the chapter's general operations. Minimum scholarship awards are $1,000; maximum could be up to $5,000. Faculty advisors for each chapter will receive the awards, select scholarship winners and determine the scholarship amounts. College juniors and seniors are eligible.  MCERF Trustee Mustafa Khattab, who is also the faculty advisor of the MCAA student chapter at Colorado State University, noted that this method accomplishes two goals.  "It strengthens ties among faculty and MCAA and it allows the faculty advisor and his/her local scholarship committee to award the scholarship dollars to students most likely to stay in the mechanical contracting and service industry."  This year's Chapter of Excellence recipients are: Colorado State University; Ferris State University; Iowa State University; Milwaukee School of Engineering; Northern Kentucky University; Pittsburg State University; Purdue University; University of Nebraska-Lincoln; University of Washington; University of Wisconsin-Stout.

MCAA PRESIDENT MAC LYNCH MAKES FIRST MCERF SCHOLARSHIP CONTRIBUTION

At the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation's (MCERF) Board of Trustees meeting on June 25, MCAA President Mac Lynch made the first contribution to the MCERF Scholarship Fund. Lynch contributed $3,000 to the Foundation and earmarked $1,000 of that contribution for the scholarship fund.  Lynch also wanted all MCAA and MSCA members, including our manufacturer-supplier partners, to know how to contribute to the scholarship fund: make a contribution of any size to the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation, and you can earmark up to 50% of that contribution for the scholarship fund.  You can also dedicate that portion of your MCERF contribution as a memorial to a loved one or in the name of your company or association.  Scholarship donors, therefore, get double recognition for contributing to the Foundation and for contributing to the scholarship fund.  As always, all contributions to MCERF, the general fund or the scholarship fund, are tax-deductible as charitable donations.  Watch the National Update and other MCAA and trade media for more information on MCERF scholarships. To make a contribution or for more information, contact Dennis Langley (dlangley@mcaa.org).

BIM FOR MECHANICAL CONTRACTORS COURSES CAN HELP YOUR COMPANY EDGE OUT YOUR COMPETITION

BIM Conferences

In a tight economy, companies are always looking for ways to get ahead of their competition...and stay there. MCAA's new BIM for Mechanical Contractors series (October 1-2 in Kansas City, MO) can help you attain that important competitive edge. The courses will bring you up to date on the key issues surrounding this dynamic process for coordinating the construction of buildings. On October 1, David Morris (EMCOR's Director of Virtual Construction) and Frank Musica (Senior Risk Management Attorney for Victor O. Schinnerer & Company, Bethesda, MD) will team up to lead the BIM Contracts & Risk Allocation course. On October 2, Morris will lead the BIM Process & Technology Implementation course.  CNA Insurance and TSI are co-sponsoring the courses--CNA is sponsoring the Day 1 course, and TSI is sponsoring the Day 2 BIM course.  A $295 rebate will be offered after the courses to attendees of both courses.
