MCAA INSTRUMENTAL IN SHAPING NEW NATIONAL BIM STANDARD
The recent widespread adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D modeling has necessitated the development of a well-defined and repeatable framework for installation level spatial coordination of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems (MEP). To ensure this consistent framework and the savings in time and change order costs that can occur with a clear interpretation of where coordination ends and new or redesign begins, MCAA, along with SMACNA and NECA, developed a definition for construction spatial coordination that has been incorporated into the brand new National BIM Standard-United States Version 2 (NBIMS - USv2) published earlier this month. The definition is found under Section 5.5.1 and can be accessed at http://www.nationalbimstandard.org/user_questionnaire.php. Fill in your name and e-mail information to access the new standard. All MCAA members are encouraged to download and use the PDF version of the new BIM standard. NBIMS - USv2 is an initiative of the buildingSMART alliance. Contact Dennis Langley (dlangley@mcaa.org) for further information. |

WHAT'S YOUR BUILDING'S BEQ?
If you're not sure what that is, then be sure to participate in MCAA's next Green Building Webinar on the ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient Program, June 14 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. ASHRAE will soon launch a new program-the Building Energy Quotient (BEQ) program-to inform owners and operators, tenants and prospective buyers about how much energy buildings use. BEQ will include an operational rating for commercial buildings and will provide users with a simplified way to measure and compare building efficiencies. Tim Wentz, associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and ASHRAE vice president, will lead the webinar.
